Quake 3 engine has this nice feature:

ignorehwgamma 1

It's great because if you run the game in windowed mode it won't brighten up the desktop and require programs like this:

sounds like a gamma problem .. try modifying your HL2 configuration files manually or if you can see the menus raise the gamma "Brightness".

ther may be a tweak like quake3's "ignoreHWgamma"

check HL2 websites for gamma tweaks
