No.
It's not the worst stuff out there, but you can do much, much better.

Good rule of thumb: if it gets lots of advertisement, it's probably shit.



My latest: Goose Island IPA
Pretty good. It was the first Goose Island I've had where I wasn't completely impressed. Not bad by any means. Just not as great as their other stuff.

I finally came across another phenomenal beer. It's easily the best pumpkin ale but I'd even go as far to say it is in my top 5 overall.

Oohhhhhhh SHIT. Just got back from Belgium. And yes, I kept track of the beer I had. Over-sized list follows:

--‘t IJ Zatte Tripel.
Had in a pub in Amsterdam. Pretty good.

--Duvel.
Met a friend in Venlo, NL. His friend owns a bar and I showed up early to get some food. Turns out they don't serve food, and I didn't want to just get up and leave, so I ordered a beer instead. Not knowing what most of the beers were, I panicked and got something standard. Oh well, Duvel is still really good.


--La Chouffe.
At the aforementioned bar, I asked some of the old townsfolk to recommend a local beer. This is what the came up with. Very nice choice.

--Maredsous 6.
Again, at the bar in Venlo. I was chatting with some Dutch locals, and my buddy came back from the bar with a glass for me. Quality stuff. Already the beers were great and I hadn't even made it out of the Netherlands.

--Diekirch Grand Cru.
Yes, even Europe has its shit beers. I had this in Berdorf, Luxembourg. I just wanted a single bottle of something cheap, and I grabbed this from a tiny grocery store. It was garbage. Almost couldn't finish it.

--Orval.
Visted the Orval monastery (good cheese, btw) so I grabbed a bottle of their Trappist beer. Fabulous. Nice and light for a trappist brew. Stopped for a countryside picnic in Belgium and drank it along with some Orval bier cheese. This stuff is delicious.

--Maes Pils.
Ordered some mussels in Brussels, and the meal came with free beer, but I didn't get to choose. A bit flat in flavor, but not undrinkable. I think it complemented the seafood fairly nicely, but that was about it. Wouldn't buy it again.

--Mort Subite Gueuze.
Wifey got this with her mussels. Loved it. Very nice lambic without the super-sweet fruitiness. In the foreground of previous photo.


--Hoegaarden De Verboden Vrucht.
Meh. Not bad. I don't really remember it too much. Had it in a pub in Brussels.

--Karmeliet Tripel.
The wife got this at the same bar in Brussels. Definitely preferred it to my Hoegaarden. Nothing new, though. I've had it in the states, too.

--Brugse Tripel.
At a restaurant in Bruges. Wife ordered this. Very nice, very refreshing for a tripel.

--Straffe Hendrik Tripel.
Up to this point, my favorite of all. Strong tripel with a complex taste slightly more reminiscent of a dubbel. Yum.

--Halve Maan Brugse Zot.
Took the brewery tour in Bruges, and got free glasses of their unfiltered blonde. It's amazing how the simplest beer in Belgium is heads and shoulders above most of what we have here. Good stuff.

--De Konink Bruin.
Went to a bar in Bruges, and my wife ordered this. I remember it was good, but at this point so many beers were starting to run together. Anyway, I was focused more on the beer I ordered:


--Rochefort 10.
Best of the trip. Hands down. If you haven't tried it, do it. Heavy, thick, complex, and just quality. I contemplated going back the next day for more.

--Dubuisson Bush Ambreé.
So we had a travel guide that suggested some beers to try, but they only picked them because of "uniqueness". Bush was on that list because it is supposedly the strongest Belgian beer. And it was still really, really good. I was expecting shitty cheap touristy alcohol swill, but I really enjoyed it.

--Grimbergen Bruin.
Had this at a restaurant in Bruges. Fuck me if I can remember what it was like. I was focused more on the pot of flemish stew and fries, and the kilo of mussels we got. Oh, and it came with free champagne...

We were only in Amsterdam for a day. I suggested the idea of contacting you dutchies, but the wife wasn't keen on meeting internet nerds...


Also, we didn't actually go to the IJ brewery... just got a glass of it in some bar.

Me, I just bought a case (24) of Cascade_____________________ Image ____ _________________ This stuff is made on that little (maybe not) island to the south of Australia called Tasmania

I visited there for 2 weeks, about a year ago on a fly drive holiday. Just a beautiful place :) As a matter of fact, drove past that brewery. Wishing now I did that in-house tour :tard: Well, maybe next time.

I dunno? I like IPA's so thats usually what I stick to. I've had Surly Furious and I like it, has quite a citrus flavor. This stuff is seasonal not definitely not as citrusy. Very fresh and expensive 4.25 a pint. Hard to find, I cleared out the liquor store.

The descriptions of Wet sound pretty good. I'll have to give it a try. I think Surly's stuff is fine, but it's not as outstanding as everyone makes it out to be. It's way overpriced for what it is... so $4.25 sounds about right. I'll keep a lookout for it. Stub & Herb's always has their stuff on tap, so it will probably show up there before long.


Went out to the Happy Gnome last weekend and had:

Lake Superior Kayak Kölsch - Been searching for a Kölsch for a long time, and finally got it. Interesting style. I prefer it to pilsner, but still not my first choice. I can't compare Lake Superior to anything else, but it was decent.

Great Divide Hibernation - Complex and malty... that's all I remember. And that it was good.

Lift Bridge Chestnut Hill - Fantastic take on a brown ale. Very nutty flavored. As good as -- if not better than -- Goose Island Nut Brown Ale.

I also had a few samples of brews I didn't care for. I think the waitress got sick of us asking for so many samples, because she brought mine out in the tiniest glass I've ever seen:

Vieille Provision Dupont Saison
Not usually a fan of saisons, but it got better the more I drank (first glass was unchilled, second was chilled). By the end, I had changed my tune: Very good

Lindemans Gueuze Cuvée René

Summit Winter Ale -- fucking fantastic. So happy to see the winters are out again
Odell Isolation Winter Ale -- Very nice, but not quite as great as the Summit.

Tried this last night and I must say it's very good. No alcohol comes through despite higher content and a very pleasing taste considering they use only pumpkin puree and no artificial flavours.

I tried both Dogfish Head 60 and 90 minute IPAs and was impressed with both. The 60 minute seemed a bit more carbonated and the 90 minute was more alcoholized :-). They were both subdued as far as the hops and ABV. Very smooth and drinkable though. Excellent IPAs and would definitely buy again. Although I still prefer Stone IPA. The hops in Stone IPA are famous for a reason.

I just had some for the first time last night. Very nice. It was actually more easily drinkable than I expected. Pretty hoppy for a barleywine, too. Nice combination of hops and malt.

Followed by Dark Horse Scotty Karate. I love me a good Scotch ale. This one was very smokey and just a little bit sweet, but not really "peaty" like some Scotch ales... and that's a good thing. It smelled a bit like compost but thankfully no taste of it. A good sipper, but I don't think I could drink more than one of these in a night.

Also had Great Lakes Christmas Ale.
Also very good, but it was the 3rd beer of the night. I just remember it was a nice copper color, slightly sweet, and not over-spiced like some xmas brews. Not as good as Summit's Winter Ale, but they're different enough to be an apples to oranges comparison.

Take half a glass of it and drop a shot of goldslagger, baileys, and fangelico.
