No I Preordered the standard version of the game that also comes with 2 bluray films, for less than a stardard new release title.

It's R* - what was the last bad game they made?

Big fan of the first 2. Looking forward to some quality next gen bullet timage.

Gamesradar slapped a 10 on it. Though they do tend to ride the hype train with the big name stuff.
2 weeks away still on Steam...

First couple of reviews I read said it's got none of the humour or psychedelic supernature of the previous games, it gets very repetitive very quickly and that it's overly long. Remember, when it originally came out, the developer specifically noted that they'd made the Max Payne games to be short and tightly packaged.
It was at the forefront of the "Shorter is Better" development movement.

I remember the other games being rather dark and not in slightest bit humourous? I don't want to read lots of reviews as I don't want to spoil the plot, but the Joystiq one says its worth a play and so far every single one of the reviews I have read and then played the games have been correct.

Also Max Payne 1 took about 10 hours, roughly the same playing time as this one?

There was quite a bit of funny in the conversations of the bad guys as i recall, i'd usually wait for them to finish talking before slow motion diving around the corner.

And some of the comic strips deliberately broke the fourth wall. The games were quite famous for it.

Only played an hour of it, but it is nice far. Feels solid and it is not too OTT so far. The animations etc are brilliant as you would expect from a Rockstar game and the general visuals are very good, even on the xbox.

Gonna sink some more hours into this when the weather is shit again, but as it is sunny then I tend to get out as much as I can so games get left by the way side.

Really enjoyed the game; the graphics are fantastic, even on a 360 so ramped up on the PC it must look amazing.

The story is great and it complimented the other 2 games nicely

It is brutal though; really brutal

I think the bit that I died most on was where you had to wait for the tank thing to stop shooting, then run over and grab the rocket launcher and fire... Daf I know but I never knew you could roll over a gun and pick it up until the end :(

There are loads of things you can do that I've not done or not perfected. Only managed 180G on the Xbox version. Didn't do even a 3rd of the grinds...also I forgot to use bullet time for about 6 chapters :olo:

Mouse is shit. I used 360 pad on the PC version, plays perfectly. I couldnt use the mouse for toffee in this one, which was off because I swore to myself there was no way I would use a pad here...

As for the "grinds", boy did they get that name bang on... Shotting 250 grenades out of the air, yeah thats not gonna take long is it lol... I only have a couple.

K my views after a few hours of play:

gameplay gets boring after a while or am i doing it wrong? It's starting to feel like a one trick pony.. the entire gameplay comes down to bullet time. Take that away, and all you have left is a pretty basic shooter 1990's style...and when you consider they completely raped mouse aiming, it pretty much shits all over the only gameplay that can be had. It's so easy to get shot when not hiding behind covers, it forces the gameplay to be a matter of just taking cover and taking out the entire room from one spot. The AI doesn't force you to be mobile, and severely punishes you for doing so.

visuals:
The initial few chapters felt meh. Nothing new to see here, and the forced indoor locations just felt like "been there done that". On the other hand, Sao Paulo has a fairly authentic atmosphere to it,and I really enjoyed the visuals when I got to that part, so that's a big plus.

storyline:
I could really care less about the storyline and what's happening. I mean wtf. It's one thing having a security job and quite another when you find yourself fighting off hoards of baddies day in and day out.. and for what? because your job is on security detail? I mean give me a break...who in their right mind would go through all that bullshit for a fucking paycheck without being emotionally connected to some greater cause? Right so they forcefully make the main character actually care about his employers, but it doesn't feel like a plausible situation. The one grace that can save the plot situation is as he explained that he is using the situation as an excuse to indulge himself. But honestly, that's not enough for me to start giving a fuck about the victims nor the main character for that matter.

mid-game score 7/10
...and that's pushing it.

Make your mind up now.

edit: I heard from many it's like 70% cutscenes, with one for every few bad guys killed. Fuck that, i'll wait on a sale.

You need to have played the other 2 games to get why he is in the situation and they also give some back ground later in the game. The story and situation fits perfectly into everything. Wait til you know all the facts before saying its pointless...

Did you play the same game as me...?

Because to me it was pretty obvious his problem was that he always let people down, mostly "the girl", and this time he was gonna fucking sort it out.

that's a better way to set it up, but I don't think he ever verbally hinted on anything like that.

K so lets say the plot is justified...I still don't give a shit about the employers, and that doesn't help.

I finished it last week, it was ok. It definitely did not have that original Max Payne feel to it. No psychadelic levels and it just felt like any other on rails shooter. Even the one liners which this game is known for were weak.

Other than not living up to the previous games as a shooter goes it was ok, it wasn't bad the graphics were very impressive and the gameplay although repetitive had it's moments.
