Right then homeslices, on an account of my shit sleeping situation, I have been turning to music played at very low levels to help me sleep. One of the tracks that seems to really help is this one:

After some research on the track it came to light that these are all spliced together from different self help audio tapes. Now, I don't need any specific books to help with any issues, but listening to someone talk with a silky smooth voice for an hour would send me straight to sleep (I think/hope)

So any of you yank types have any tips on good listening tape things I can try?

I'd recommend against listening to these if you're having trouble falling asleep.

However, if you insist on this approach, I'd highly recommend that, no matter the topic, that the narrator have a monotone voice (that's what relaxes people for hypnosis...the boring monotone).

Can't you just smoke pot an hour before bed to fall asleep? Besides...actually reading the book (instead of listening to it) will probably cause you to nod off better.

Why the hate for them? Genuine question :)

I've done reading but I find my mind/imagination goes into overdrive and although I do get heavy eyes, I fail to sleep. And I don't smoke :P

No hate. As someone who's had sleep problems I've probably tried every "remedy" there is, and most of them are bunk.

As to your mind/imagination going into overdrive, perhaps you shouldn't read anything that you find very interesting?

The only real advice I can give is for you to ensure that you don't eat anything or take in any caffeine of any kind 3 hours before bed, don't do any late exercising and perhaps have something in your bedroom that generates white noise...like a fan. And for fucks sake don't even consider doing any thinking about work, projects, relationships, learning a new language, etc that will give your brain an excuse to do actual thinking. As soon as those thoughts appear, crush them or they'll keep you up.

Having a wank right before bed is the best way to get a good sleep.

Also, don't play video games right before you go to bed.

also, avoid cheese, fatty or spicy foods, stimulants, narcotics, emetics, sleeping on the left, sleeping on the right, lying on your back, facing east, facing west, facing Mecca, and most of all don't believe urban myths about what causes sleeplessness because they are mostly bullshit with no empirical foundation whatsoever

I am aiming for about 6 hours a night...maybe a little more. I go to bed at about 11 and my alarm goes off at 5:50.
I try to go to bed at the same time every night so I get into a pattern or routine. Alcohol doesn’t help at all, both in small and large quantities.
I get regular exercise, eat well and my job stimulates my mind. I went caffeine free for over 2 years which little to no effect on my sleep.
Some nights I actually get an awesome sleep, but they are very rare indeed. Some nights I go to bed at 11pm and I wake up at 2am and will be awake for hours. Wide awake.

I’m starting to believe that segmented sleep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segmented_sleep) is what I should naturally be aiming for, though it doesn’t lend itself well to modern living.
