remember that DARPA quadruped ?

Post by Tsakali »

well, here it is doing 18mph

kinda creepy, and i still don't get the point of it. one rock in the wrong place and it would be down on the floor looking like it's having a seizure.

why not just set up some kind of rover?

It's called a horse. Look into it, DARPA.

Even animals can't run all out on uneven terrain. I think that's fairly impressive, if it get's to rocky terrain it can just slow down cause it's predecessor was able to handle that.

Yeah, but animals can make adjustments on the fly to maintain balance. There's a lot of coding to do before that robot can do the same, and until then, it'll be more trouble than it's worth. Definitely still in the proof of concept stage. Right now I'm struggling to see where something like this has an advantage over more conventional robots. Although my wording may be a clue; what exactly do I compare it to? Pack animals? Scout vehicles? Transportation?

It's earlier counterpart was able to scale hills that I don't think most vehicles could scale. It was also fairly stable and able to adjust for getting kicked in the side which was impressive.

you can kinda see it balancing itself, that data must be a goldmine of info and I'm sure with that they'll be able to create code to perfect it.

Probably more of a learning process than a functional design i'd say. Emulating animal functions is kinda like the child-phase of robotic development.

Why does it run backwards?

If it ran the other way, would it be lower to the ground when running? I feel like a real cheetah stays low to hide from prey it hunts, which isn't really what the robot is going for. Though it would be funny to see it stalk a Roomba. :p

speaking of real cheetahs, this thing's "spine" should be alot more flexible if it's going to get anywhere near as fast...also,there needs to be a fairly sized tail which seems to be very important for balancing. That might be important only when trying to change direction while running, so that might not be too crucial, unless they make hunter drones out of these babies. :ducky:

it runs like a rabbit, but that doesn't look as sexy on the front of the brochure.

that's not the Big Dog, nor the other, more recent Robohorse. That's the Cheetah. OP is a moran.

I posted something about the MIT Biomimetics lab and the cheetah-based bot they were building last summer after I saw a presentation by the egghead in charge of the project at NI Week. This doesn't appear to be the same robot, but it's HIGHLY similar. Makes me wonder if the two are related or someone's looking at a lawsuit?

Anyways, the point is, Tsatziki's a tool.
