Human bird is trolling the world

Post by Eraser »

I hadn't heard about this until last evening. There was this Dutch guy who had made a suit which allowed him to fly like a bird, with flapping wings and all. He had documented the whole process of developing it through YouTube videos, up to the point where he had a video of him flying up into the sky:

He amazed quite a few people because this is something many people have been trying for the past few hundreds of years (remember Da Vinci's flying machine?)

But of course, it was just one big hoax. Him flying was faked and he admitted this yesterday on a Dutch television show called "De Wereld Draait Door".

So how successful was his troll? I guess pretty successful.

lol expert opinion
The video of Jarno Smeets' flight is cool, and I don't see evidence that it was faked

Fuck has become a relatively common way of swearing in the Netherlands, but we've adopted it from the English we see on television and in movies. I don't think it's in the Dutch dictionary.

If you translate fuck literally (as in the verb "to fuck") then it would be translated as "neuken", but that doesn't roll of the tongue as well :)

Shit is the same as with fuck. But the literal translation is "poep" (or maybe "schijt" is more appropriate). If used as verb it's poepen or schijten.

How could anyone fall for that? His takeoff looks really awkward, and even digitally altered to a degree. It's hard to explain, but it just doesn't look right. I saw this on Facebook a few days ago and didn't believe it, but the video did its job, because I went to their website and started browsing around.

I saw it on Wired, I'll admit it didn't look quite right but it did seem believable at first. It's a well-done hoax.

i don't know, I'm not an engineer but, is it really as simple as mimicking a birds wings, but with enough span to support our weight? I was always under the impression that our arms were not strong enough to support our body weight in a bird-like configuration.

Either way, any flying would have to be very limited in duration ...at least they got that part right.

Indeed. We lack the right muscles in our shoulders and chest to provide enough thrust for lift in a traditional ornithopter. It might be more believable if the flapping motion powered a propeller of a fixed wing aircraft, or had it been a recumbent bike powering a ornithopter mechanism. Human flight through flapping isn't likely, though Duhard looks like he is trying to build up enough muscle to form some kind of propulsion through fapping.

It's all about wing loading. The reason why it seemed believable to me at first glance(in addition to the fact that it was a well-made video) was the talk of the power-assist motors that were allegedly in the pack he was wearing. If you have enough help in moving your arms, you could fly with correctly built bird-like wings, provided they were large enough.

It sounds plausible, but the actual take off footage looks ridiculous. I can't believe the dude on gizmodo thought this was real.

if you closely watch the video youll see his arms aren't powering the wings. His arms are just making flapping motions to control the flapping of the wings. It'd all hypothetical ofcourse since it'd fake.

Oh that's right, I read a blurb about some Wiimotes or something. I watched the small-sized Youtube clip, couldn't see much. It did strike me that the wings weren't deflecting enough, more like just...vibrating.
