Free weekend on Steam is on.
It's a bit like Counterstrike (on certain gamemodes - though there are many) with swords, boards, bows and brilliantly meaty, skill-based melee combat.

Give it a go, 'cos it's a bloody riot. :owned:

edit: also the almost MontyPythonesque screaming and battlecries as heads and limbs go flying is fucking hilarious.
"FOR THE ORDARRRRRRRRRRR!" and "BUGGER IT AAALL! FALL BAAAAACK"

Great stuff.

Curious; how is it any more tedious than pointing and shooting? I find it the polar opposite of tedium tbh - more engaging in the need to read an opponent and somewhat more fun than getting sniped from 4 miles away by some camping slag.

The melee takes far more than aiming and pressing fire. You can sidelong swing, overhead strike and lunge (latter two brilliantly utilising the mousewheel - why the fuck more games don't use the wheel for primary control actions, instead of for silly shit like weapon cycling and camera zooming when it's one of easiest things to press whilst moving about on keys is beyond me, I've been doing it for years on any game that lets me), plus there's parrying, dodging, feints, throwing weapons or a shield for (aimed) blocking. Ducking a lunge as you swing around and take his legs off is far more satisfying than just clicking to pop some sod who happens to be under your crosshairs.

As with Dark Souls, I don't believe vids do the experience of playing the game and learning the mechanics any justice at all imo.

Really is fun stuff. Especially on a server where folks fight with some honour, where last men standing often duke it out with fists and duels are allowed to play out rather then 5 guys steaming into the last remaining archer.

you mean like this? (there's a bit of intro babble, but the actual combat bits look like the kind of thing you're talking about)

Jesus fuck to hell no. Them gimpy dribblers are nothing but clueless WoWheads, lost and last in any game without a by-the-numbers wiki guide.
Just blocking and trading LMB spam will more often than not get you shitcanned and sans limbs. 1v1 is boring as hell to me though. It's not the same without the yelling and teamates accidentally lopping each other's heads off.

picked it up in a sale a while back, great game.

but aye, it's at its best in the team modes, especially the missions. choke points in FPS games get boring quickly, choke points in chivalry are fucking hilarious. charged into one swinging the largest of the bastard swords the other night and got a 4-for-1 decapitation at the same moment as someone else lopped my own noggin off with a similar move. noisy carnage to peaceful silence in less than a second. the camera (which stays in the eyes of your player model) spiralled and bounced off down the hill, along with everybody else's, like someone dropping a barrelful of apples.

archers are bloody irritating, but if one bothers you enough, you can walk over to them while they slowly turn your shield into a porcupine, and then beat the fucker to death with a spiked club.

massive (bit buggy, but loads and loads of content) update:

http://kotaku.com/5980598/chivalry-medi ... ree-update

that's a free update - no signing up for yet another bullshit system tray client, no monthly subscription - you don't even have to like it on facebook.

I had a quick pop tonight. Didn't see any new maps, but couldn't be arsed to go server hopping, so just carried on grinding unlocks. Christ I suck at bows. The Morning Star though, on a Man at Arms is my current favorite for rushing in and beasting folk swinging 2 handers.

FPS seems to have taken a bit of a dip mind, despite optimising being a patch note point. For UDK3, it doesn't half eat a rig.

OK, now I really want to play this game. Is the gameplay actually fun, or is it mostly awesome because you're dismembering people?

It really is good fun and very much skill-based with swing/parry-timing, not so much fastest trigger finger first. It may take a while to get a feel for it, but once you find a weapon that suits you and get a handle on how long particlar enemy classes/weapons take to swing it goes from feeling janky and awkward, straight into immensely satisfying. The decaps and amputations do add to the fun factor, I find my own death more often than not hilarious - but trust, the combat is far more nuanced than vids of folks doing the Dark Souls block - attack - block - attack would suggest.

Bought this last night and love it. There are a lot of accidental moments that are just hilarious. Accidentally decapitating your teammates has never been so amusing. :olo:
