q3work1 - Arena2501 1v1/small ffa

Q3Work1 - Arena2501

I recently installed gtk at work so when there is down time i have something to do. So far i've been working on this little
1v1/ffa map. Simple textures and a rough item layout so far. I think its mainly solid but im always interested to get feekback from you guys.

Update 1: Added more detail, cleaned up the lighting. Angled the tp to mh, ummm just bits and pieces really.

Mini update: Just a few more tweaks. Bed time. :ninja:

Have not played it against bots yet, two quick comments:
  • The JP from the bottom floor to the MH, IMO, should be angled to make clear it will push you not only up but also back.
  • I noted at least 4 "decorative niches" that all seem to be empty? Might like to think about putting something into them. 5H or Shards or something. Just for decoration ;).

Nice looks, I liked it. A litle darkm but it almost does not interfere playing.

Decorative niches, which contains the spawn points, sometimes misleading - i think that they must have some items. And I is run through them.

More clipping: When jumping from the ra down you would hit ya head on the ceiling, smoothed that out. Covered all patch meshes.

More detail work: Added extra windows, put glass in tp room ceiling. Added extra alcove by the ra for the sg ammo. Little bits here and there..

More lighting editing: Still adjusting lighting levels so its not too dark, but not too light at the same time.

A few item tweaks: Moved the sg ammo and put a 50 health in the old spot.

Update: More pathways added in main room (ie getting from the rg - ra area) More detailing to make the environment seem more realistic, but trying out using
detail more sparingly than i usually do. focal points vs visual noise is a tough balance... added a wee tower thing outside the rl rooms windows.. hmm what else,
ahh, new tp added just near the sg pool, goes to the same destination as the rl tp. (always nice to telefrag someone lol)

nice color scheme!

i'd replace the rusty red by something with less texture; or maybe add some border highlighting on the places where you use it as a trim. there's a slight tiling effect that interferes with the geometry.

awesome brushwork on the arch, btw.

and get rid of the blue wall panels used in shot 1. they are the ugliest texture id made for q3.

This may sound weird, but I really love your screwed to metal wooden planks near the RA and also near the RL... I just love that detail.

The layout I am not so thrilled with... that does not really mean that much in the grand scheme of things... I am probably just not such a fan of too much up/down jumping/dropping in gameflow.

Again, like with all your maps it saddens me that your ceiling areas are so amazingly detailed and interesting, but apparently not leaving enough "greatness" for the rest of the map the players will have in their face almost all the time (i.e. the paths and corridors). The problem is that no one really looks up in MP, unless there is gameplay up there.

yeah, this time around (i usually go to far i thought?) i wanted to keep the visual noise down to a minimum. but as you say no one really stares at the ceilings so i thought i could have a bit more fun there. sorry its not your cup of tea again... lol i just don't seem to make maps you enjoy :)

Just noted... I did not actually have a problem with the map, or anything along the lines of "not liking" it... I only felt the gameflow was not grabbing me immediately.

Most of the brushwork and texturing as always is very creative and well done.

E.g. I really love the brushwork around the windows in this screenshot:

Played against 3 bots... that was actually quite fun... bots do congregate, but that makes several areas interesting hotspots in combat.

cheers mate, yeah the bot play annoys me as i could move stuff around to move them about a bit more but then it would ruin what i think is a good layout for human vs human. damn q3 bots :) (get away from that rl you bastards! :olo:)
