I haven't tried it myself, but the guy in that link I found through Google seems to have a strong recommendation for a program to do it for you as well as a few other alternatives.

first off, its "etc".

i personally have used winamp in the past, but the problem is and prolly always will be that the ipod sorts its files a bit odd, leaving quite the mess of folders on your harddrive for you to clean up.

Can't you just use a MP3 renaming util to fix that? Assuming your MP3s are tagged, don't those utilities rename and reorganize automatically?

perhaps, havent tried it.

its especially annoying with compilations. it creates a folder for each artist, then cd name, then adds the file, e.g.

Bon Jovi / Slippery When Wet / Living on a Prayer.mp3

this works great when you have the entire album on there. but if you have this as part of a compilation, itll be like

Bon Jovi / Hair Metal Volume 2 / Livin on a Prayer.mp3
Ratt / Hair Metal Volume 2 / Round & Round.mp3
Poison / Hair Metal Volume 2 / Nothing but a Good Time.mp3

x20.
if you then import it into itunes itll make an even bigger mess :(

long story short. no idea if mp3 renamers can clean this up for you :paranoid:

I store compilations as:

_Compilations/album/track.mp3

You don't have to let iTunes do the organizing for you, there is an option... at least on your computer, I have no idea how it stores them on the iPod.

thats the thing. when its added to your ipod it stores it as itunes would have, regardless of how you organized it yourself.
bit of a cunt. its almost like it wasnt meant for reverse importing !

[edit] akshually, scratch that. iTunes would sort it like obs posted (sans underscore). It's really the iPod's internal sorting that fucks things up. Pianowires are needed, I think.

After "transcoding" all the music I had, there are a few songs (100 to be exact) that produce an error stating that it's not authorized to play on this computer. WTF? All these songs where legitimately bought and paid for...
