I've searched the forums and haven't found anything mentioning this. I have quake 3 arena installed and it works fine. But when I try to install team arena it seems it's not compatable with 64 bit.

Any ideas?

are you using the ioQuake 3 engine? If you're not, I suggest it.

for team arena, I think you just need a folder that lives next to your baseq3 named "missionpacks" and similarly to the baseq3 folder, it contains a pak0.pk3 or something similar, so as long as you have ioquake3 and the files in the right places, it should work. Personally, I haven't played with team arena in ages, but now that you mention it, I might see if I can get into it again, if I've horribly misguided you, I'll come back here and post up how my files are set up to get it working (it should work the same in windows 7)

in your totally-legally acquired copy of quake 3 team arena you may or may not have in ISO format, you will find the following file:

/Setup/missionpack/pak0.pk3

when the installer runs, it moves this file into your quake3 directory

You'll need to make a /Program Files(X86)/Quake 3 Arena/missionpack directory if you don't already have one.
(this is assuming you have quake 3 installed in 'Program Files (X86)/Quake 3 Arena/, if you have quake 3 installed somewhere else, obviously you'd want to put the missionpack folder there instead)

move the /Setup/missionpack/pak0.pk3 file to this directory.

Now, you should be able to start quake 3 normally, click on "Team Arena" in the main menu, and it should start without any issues. if it gives you any problems, bring 'em back here and I'll see if I can help you sort them out.

Hang on, you shouldn't overwrite anything in baseq3 with team arena content.
Simply copy over the pak0.pk3 from your Team Arena install CD to a folder named "missionpack" inside your quake 3 installation directory.

really? my setup still worked after I over-wrote those files, but you're right, I thought it was strange it was changing those files, I guess that could break functionality with PunkBuster. I know when quake 3 loads PK3s, the last thing to be loaded would over-write (in memory) anything that had the same name...but....what purpose could those 4 PK3 files serve then since they're in a directory that wouldn't auto-load with the team arena mod?

I know Team Arena also installs point release 1.27, and I'm sure it doesn't matter if you overwrite baseq3 pk3 files with those from update 1.27, but to be entirely clear about it: pak0.pk3 certainly shouldn't be overwritten :)

But if you've already got point release 1.32 installed, the only thing you need to do is copy over pak0.pk3 from your Team Arena CD to the missionpack folder and you're done.

Ok.. found out that I didn't have 1.32 installed. once I did that Team arena installed from the cd and seems to work fine.

Wow, sounds like me, I was in a car crash that ..by all rights, should have torn me limb from limb, but I got home totally safe, literally one bruise and one small cut, and started checking the download counter for the map i'd just released the day before.(rockethuxtable)

Try to see what com_hunkmegs is set to and if it's lower than 96, set it to 96. If it's already on 96, try setting to 128.

Two things:

1. You should upgrade to 1.32c or ioquake3 - 1.27g is ancient.

2. Looks like that isn't the whole log. You can export it with '/condump condump.txt' - use http://pastie.org/ if you run into the forum's post size limit.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that the Team Arena maps only work with 1.32. Bullet point #2 is for if you run into issues after upgrading.

TA maps work with 1.27 and higher, no? At least, that's the point release that came with the Team Arena CD.

Pretty sure (but not 100%) that TA uses things that didn't appear until 1.30 or later. Have there been point releases or updates for TA?

I dunno. AFAIK update 1.27 came with Team Arena so I don't assume that a clean TA installation makes use of features that were introduced in 1.30. There weren't any separate Team Arena updates.

Oh this completely slipped my mind (sorry :tear: ) , but yeah com_hunkmegs 128 or higher (I vote higher), ioquake3 latest version,and I didn't see a game system shutdown in that log - what error did you get?

Try getting a screenshot and uploading it to tinypic or imageshack.

When you change your com_hunkmegs value, quake 3 *should* remember it, and at a minimum, it should take effect immediately I think, as it changes how the next map loads. but in the event your setup is somehow different, you can edit quake3's startup script by hand as shown in obsidian's link. look for your quake 3 config file @ /quake3/baseq3/q3config.cfg

Ok. Tried the hunkmegs to 192 and now get the error code at 1947416 from main zone. this number comes up everytime now when trying to run distant screams.

Should I change it to a higher number?

I'm sure misantropia is right. However, I don't think you need to worry about hitting that limit.

Do you know how much ram you have? I always give quake 3 all the resources I can...because not only is it one of like...6 games I play, it's what I play the most, by far...hands down....in 2011...Still.

I think my com_hunkmegs is set to 512 but I also had 4GB of ram and nothing else running but OEM Windows 7 64-bit.

My question is...how is it possible other people can just install this on their computers, way back when it came out, and not run into this problem, and somehow today, you are? I don't mean this to sound like blame, it just doesn't seem right

There is 6 gig ram in this machine. I changed the hunkmegs to 500 and now q3a wont run any map. changed it back and still will not run maps. Will try to get on it tonight and try some other things.

does it report malloc errors when you load other maps? that's....not right at all, as a side note, when telling programs to allocate memory, it might be good practice to use numbers that are powers of 2, eg: 512 instead of 500.

try loading the map without any bots. does it work then ?

also, try upping your com_zonemegs to 32
same procedure as with the hunkmegs.

@VolumetricSteve. actually, when TA came out people were running into the same problems. that's why id software decided to omit Distant Screams from the mapselection screen.

my next move would be to check if you have an anti-virus program that's doing something weird to your memory. If not that, if you don't have a swap file set up, you should.

Start > Right click on 'Computer' > Select 'Properties' > Go to 'Advanced System Settings' on the left hand side > Go to the 'Advanced' tab > in the 'Performance' area, click 'Settings' > Go to the 'Advanced' tab > in the 'Virtual Memory' area, click 'Change' >

Here, you should see "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" checked, and everything else should be greyed out. If it is, and you're having this problem (assuming it's a virtual memory thing, which it shouldn't be but it doesn't hurt to check)
you can force your system to crate one. Uncheck the first checkbox so you can edit the settings. Assuming you have one drive, you should only see "C:" represented in the list there.

Click on "Custom size:"

I can't think of a reason the following values would cause any problems on a modern system.

Initial size: 4096
Maximum size: 8092
