Play like it’s 93 again

Post by Doombrain »

Hello. Over on the Q3W discord we’re putting together some old school Q3 games. Details/times to follow.

PS, this isn’t QuakeLive. You’ll need the retail version or Steam version.
RAWs server is up and running.

What is this Q3 you speak of? Some kind of newfangled video game youngsters play these days?

Man I still have my CD copy but I don't think it'll install on Windows 10. Especially since I don't have a godamn CD player in the laptop anymore lol. I could probably find the install files online and just use my key though assuming that still works....

Don't think you even need a CD key. I don't have one entered and I can still connect to the server.

Hmmmm I'm gonna have to rummage a portable drive so I can extract the install files from my CD then.

I was playing with you guys and my wife said, why are you smiling like a kid?
And it hit me, because I'm playing with guys I last played with when we actually were kids. \o/

I installed Q3 last night, I still have my original CD from '99. And I found my Team Arena disc too. Hot damn! I'll join on as soon as someone lets my ass onto discord so I can get an IP address or something :olo:

There's a few ways you can get Q3 working again, no need for CD Keys. Both have worked on my Windows 10 machine running 20H2.

1) ioquake3 - https://ioquake3.org/get-it/
The ioquake3 project is backwards compatible with PR 1.32 (Windows, Mac, Linux). You can install mods (Like OSP). All you really need is a copy of pak0.pk3 to place in the baseq3 folder. That particular file does not come with the open source engine. I use this client on Windows 10 since it seems to play nicer on 1080 resolution.

2) PR 1.32
If you install the point release on Windows 10 (without a proper game install), all you need to do is copy pak0.pk3 to the effective baseq3 folder. There's no need to actually "install" the original game through Steam or original media. This is another way to get up and running very quickly on Windows 10.

As far as game servers are concerned, we've been chatting on Discord about different ways to tackle this challenge. I managed to get ioquake3 running in a container. (My Git Hub -> https://github.com/alcachofass/ioquake3container). Most recently, I was able to deploy this container in a "serverless" fashion on AWS Elastic Container Service. In other words, I can run a q3 server on AWS without having to pay for a proper "VM in the cloud." So far, testing has been rather positive for North American players. Don Carlos was getting about 125 ms ping from UK to the Ohio data center where this instance runs. I'm using this as a way to grow my AWS expertise in a way that doesn't feel like work. Eventually we could have a Lambda function send a message to Discord every time a user logs on..... #imagination.

If we can generate enough demand, we can coordinate a weekly game. I'd love to do something like that with everyone here. I had a few rounds with Raw and the smiles/joy was real. In any case, keep an eye on the Discord for some impromptu matches.

Shit if I could get setup properly I might be able to host a server that'd be close enough to the UK and the US as I'm in Atlantic Canada and on a 1.5GB connection.
