Originally, it was simply a shortened version of "Ideas from the Deep" (IDF), which was the name of a company co-founded by Romero in the late 80's. The "freudian" interpretation stuff came later.

I think it is almost equivalent to the 1st choice "source of instinctive drive" in a sense, where consciousness and unconsciousness meet.
At least every game concept from id is representing it.

If you regard b as 6, it becomes 6i.
If you read 6i backward, it can be read as "I six".

SoFI, SoFII and Quake4 have prooved this.

But there used to be more ravenous companies in the werld.
They are pirates of the southern chinese who sold tons of crappy expensive NES and SNES rom cartridges in their dominating imperial island!

id doesn't stand for intellectual design (and certainly not for intelectual design). The "Ideas from the Deep" thing Hannibal posted is where the name comes from.

id is iq, but upside down, because the opposite of having iq is enough to play their brainless shootan games. This is why after 1993 their logo is always lowercase.
