I know some people will call me crazy, but I just decided to go from IE7 to FF3 (that isn't why you'll call me crazy) and am rather annoyed by the text in FF3. After some google research I found that the reason is due to the fact that IE7 has cleartype and FF3 does not. I tried turning on cleartype for everything, and using the microsoft cleartype control panel app, but it bothers me outside of a browser. I know I am being rather picky, but is there a way to get cleartype in FF3 and not in anything else?

Umm... works fine for me. Firefox 3 has a superior font rendering engine. You sure it's not just the web font or something else?

Here is some more weirdness.
Image
FF3 on the left, IE7 on the right.
Now its definately possible that it is something I have done, but I recall trying FF a couple years ago, perhaps FF1, and that was back with IE6 and it did the same thing. It was a different computer too. I don't really tweak much in IE7, nothing that affects the fonts, and this install of FF is bone stock (altho I did add AdBlock). Please someone make it look right.

:EDIT: My bad on which browser is which.

you did something goofy with your fonts in IE. here's mine, same page:

*edit* pretty close to the same page. basic layout shouldn't differ.

It's not even the same font between the two browsers in that wikipedia screenshot.

My bad guys, FF3 is on the left and IE7 is on the right. I'm sorry for the confusion. Its FF that looks all dull, although that may have happened from an error of mine, I'll reinstall it and then see if it is still like that.

Ok, so by accident I changed a couple of options for the nasty. The original question still remains of is there anyway to get ClearType inside of Fire Fox without having to apply it to everything?

Here is a screenshot of Fire Fox after the settings were reset:

Again, sorry for the confusion, I screwed up some settings in FF and then misidentified them (I was not 100% sober last night). My original question is still, is there an addon or a tweak that will allow me to have ClearType in FF?

I have smooth fonts in FF3. So something is wrong on your side only.

Well if I turn on Clear Type in Windows for all applications they are identical.

But Clear Type on everything annoys me, it especially makes Trillian really blurry, and I just want to have Clear Type in Fire Fox. I am not here to know whether or not its universal or just me, I just want to know if there is any way to get Clear Type in Fire Fox, whether it is by a setting in Windows or by an addon, or a tweak in Fire Fox, does anyone know how to do that?

There is no seperate cleartype enabler for FF that I'm aware of. You'd be better off resolving the issue with trillian.

Cleartype Tuner may give you a compromise.
