Pay attention hollywood, you idiots. You make a film of a game, then make a fucking film of the fucking game. THIS is what we want, the game's characters, locations, weapons, sounds, but in live action. Do not fuck with the plot. Do not fuck with anything. Shove any artistic license you think you're entitled to up your urethra, sideways. Don't waste three quarters of the budget casting some pretty fag in the lead. Just make a fucking film of the game. And you will win. Like this does.

Sure it needs some polish, but for an amateur project it's cool. You shotgun modding rednecks are all the same.

The short film Escape from City 17: Part One was inspired by the Half-Life 2 episodes and chronicles the escape from City 17 by some members of the citizens resistance. It was created by The Purchase Brothers, a commercial directing duo, and their small team based in Toronto, Canada. They have created this short, the first in a series, on a shoestring budget using handmade costumes, some donated equipment

Take that into account, and compare directly with the multitude of steaming jobs churned out by lollywood, from Resi to Bloodrayne to Tomb Raider.

Its win because they stuck so fucking close to what makes the game. Its not about money lads, its about idiots dumbing down plots and design so that everybody can get in on it.

This proves that TO US, its one of those "jizz in your pants" type things, but what about Frank, who has never played Half Life and just likes action films? Well he will think it sucks ass.

So unless its gonna make a lot of $$$, game movies will continue to change everything and anything they can, sadly :
:(

That said there are enough HL fans out there to put money into watching this thing... I still find it odd there isnt a HL movie? Its so perfect for it...

:!: :!: :!:

If Valve know what's good for them, they should give those two a breifcase of cash and tell them to get on with it. That was great

Pretty cool, but the cam work was too shaky. I know the shaky-cam was intentional, just a bit over the top.

i doubt it was intentional.

that's the filming environment that annoying fake shaky cam (*cough* battlestar galactica) is trying to mimic.

it's commendable , other than some shockingly impressive shots of the city, the quality of sound / cinematography and acting is not there.

And yes someone with cash should take on HL story line asap

That Escape from City 17 pt 2 video is a bit un-cohesive isn't it?

I felt cheated by the Portal video. That is the exact thing Hollywood is doing to game movies. They write some random script, sprinkle it with one or two elements from the game and slap the same title on it. That video has nothing to do with the Portal video game. I'm not sure why everyone is so excited about it.

I thought the Outside Aperture short caught the essence and feeling of Portal in a better way. It's full of little references to Portal that you'll only recognize if you've played the game.

the first portal video wins it for me by far. Simply put, it was created masterfully... hollywood quality, in special effects, scene direction etc. Plus instead of being an overly nerdy duplication of the video game on many aspects ( as the 2nd video was almost forcefully doing) it took some of the core aspects as we know them and created something that is more applicable to the big screen and to the general public. You don't have to be a nerd to appreciate the first video. It captures the essence of portal and creates a more intriguing short story line with great action sequences. This is the type of a more 'true to life' formula that most successful comic/game adaptations utilize. Brilliant piece of film imo.
