Would you know why my name never appears on the blue screen that says 'Welcome' as I boot into my desktop? My name is definitely in control panel/user accounts and I'm the only user of this computer, therefore I have the lofty title of administrator.

Just because you are the only user on the computer, that doesn't make you administrator..

if the thing auto logins then it wont show the user name, when you have multiple accounts on the computer and the GUI login, it will show "Welcome" followed by the user name..

Well it does say my name with 'computer administrator' next to it in user accounts. Also, on my previous installation of xp on my old drive it also used to say my name on the welcome screen, and I don't recall using a password, nor were there ever any other users.
Oh well, it's not important and thanks for the info.

Probably set not to auto login previously.

Well, I've just disabled the welcome screen along with fast user switching. It does require me to press ok when my name comes up in a box, but the whole process of rebooting is much faster without the welcome screen. Is this what you mean by not having auto login? I'm still not sure how my name used to come up in the welcome screen though. I'm pretty sure it did, but now I'm wondering if I imagined it. :paranoid:

some update of .net framework made the login screen come up even if there was only one (passwordless) user.
user controlpanel2 could 'fix' this.

a clean install of xp would skip it by default.
