i have 3x 512 ram cards, i put 2 in 2 dark slots and it works ok. i tried to put the third one in one of the 2 remaining pink slots and the machine wouldnt run, was only beeping, and then told me i need to reset my cpu frequency when i took it out. i went into bios and out and the machine ran normaly. so whats the deal? are the pink ones for some other kind of ram?

im sorry if i didnt write enough info. i will so if you tell me what other info you would need to help me

Mobo model?

Are all 3 sticks of RAM the same type, frequency, latency?

Many mobos have a preference for which dim slots you occupy first and in which order. You'll have to check documentation for this. For example, it may require you to fill up the pink slots first and then a single card in the dark one, or some other order.

Frequency:
Your sticks of RAM are usually labeled with the peak transfer rate (ie. DDR2-3200, PC3-6400, etc.), which is derived from the frequency.

Timings/Latency:
Usually listed as a string of values like 3-3-3. That may not be labeled. It's not as big of a deal.

If you are running memory of different frequencies, your motherboard may not accept it. If it does, it will downclock your faster RAM to match the slowest one. It may even not take memory of certain frequencies at all. Again, you'll have to read up on the documentation, how your mobo behaves in this case is up to the manufacturer.

Also, make sure you test the odd pair of memory to make sure it works. Take out your other two matching sticks and just try to boot from the single odd stick. This will tell you if the odd stick will works with your mobo at all or not.

It's rare to break a computer just by sticking in memory. You would have to do something stupid to cause a short. If anything it just won't boot and ask for a reset of the BIOS as you discovered.

slots could also possibly be interleaved, meaning pairs of ram in each set of slots. manual should mention if so.
