Yeah it can be characterized as being much more like Chernobyl now than Three Mile Island. Looks like it's only going to get worse before it gets better too.

Japan has announced that the nuclear evacuation will be 'long term'.

Apparently Stephen forgot to relay news of super Japan decontaminate tech to the proper authorities.

Yeah, when they said the high radiation levels were an error? They were wrong.

Quote:

Engineers speculated that the radiation surges may be coming from a partial meltdown of the fuel core of reactor No. 1. It appears that small segments of the melted fuel rods in that reactor are undergoing what is known as "localized criticality," emitting brief flashes of heat and radiation.

I guess the big question here is -- how is this going to impact manga and anime production?

My brother works for Subaru and I was talking to him about this earlier. This is going to majorly impact global operations for them, they had 2 months worth of stock on hand but the logistics of getting this stuff out is a bit more complex now. Not to mention that production has not managed to resume just yet. To reiterate the obvious, the effects of this on the country's economy is going to be devastating at best. Screw manga, we need our rice mobilez O_O

Getting worse, not better.

http://english.kyodonews.jp/news/2011/04/84721.html

Quote:
The Nuclear Safety Commission of Japan released a preliminary calculation Monday saying that the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant had been releasing up to 10,000 terabecquerels of radioactive materials per hour at some point after a massive quake and tsunami hit northeastern Japan on March 11.

The disclosure prompted the government to consider raising the accident's severity level to 7, the worst on an international scale, from the current 5, government sources said. The level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale has only been applied to the 1986 Chernobyl catastrophe.

The current provisional evaluation of 5 is at the same level as the Three Mile Island accident in the United States in 1979.

According to an evaluation by the INES, level 7 accidents correspond with a release into the external environment radioactive materials equal to more than tens of thousands terabecquerels of radioactive iodine 131. One terabecquerel equals 1 trillion becquerels.

Going back in time a month is enlightening.

http://www.businessinsider.com/japan-re ... isk-2011-3

Quote:
I repeat, there was and will *not* be any significant release of radioactivity from the damaged Japanese reactors.

By "significant" I mean a level of radiation of more than what you would receive on - say - a long distance flight, or drinking a glass of beer that comes from certain areas with high levels of natural background radiation.

To quote the War Nerd, the people at the top are just as dumb as you are, just meaner and greedier.

This sucks. I really wanted to visit Japan. And yes, I know it's still there, but it's not the same and probably won't be for a while.

I know this sounds selfish...

Kyodo, y u no link source?

The last thing I read on the topic of Chernobyl was that only the emergency workers died and those who later developed issues did so because they consumed iodine 131 laden food.

WTF is this? Why is everyone bashing xer0s for being so stupid? That's my job...and as xer0s will attest, the only reason I bash his stupidity is because I hate America.

Why do you all hate America?

And xer0s, you're talking about a country that was nuked - twice - and came out stronger than ever. You'll just have to delay your vacation plans to their country for a few years. I've mentioned the "Lizard Brain" to you before and you really should stop using it as you are now in your sociopathic desire to visit Japan.

And I don't think calling you a sociopath is out of bounds as you clearly only care about whether or not the streets are clean of destroyed buildings, upturned cars and freighter ships sitting in parking lots when you get there.

I'm thinking that that might be a good idea for anyone in the northern hemisphere.

Surprise, surprise

Quote:
According to the disclosure today, workers discovered earlier this week that No. 1's containment vessel has been leaking water and today discovered a sizeable hole they believe was created by fallen fuel pellets. The water leakage not only indicates that the clean up efforts will take longer than originally expected but also that the worst case scenario was already underway when TEPCO said it had been avoided.

That would practically include every fucking animal that can be eaten as well, or am I mistaken? They won't get sparking mineral water given out in japanese stables/pastures/... all of a sudden.
Beside that, it's also mushrooms from the affected area people should be really concerned about, since these things store fallout stuff pretty well.

PS: Waiting for flames over "fallout stuff"

This is equal parts inspiring, courageous, morbid and, perhaps, slightly insane. Also makes a lot of sense imo: "Volunteering to take the place of younger workers at the power station is not brave, Mr Yamada says, but logical."

Quote:
Some have compared them to kamikazes, but the more than 200 elderly volunteers who want clean up the Fukushima power station say they are just being practical. 72-year-old retired engineer Yasuteru Yamada says: "I am 72 and on average I probably have 13 to 15 years left to live. Even if I were exposed to radiation, cancer could take 20 or 30 years or longer to develop. Therefore us older ones have less chance of getting cancer." So far the government is hesitant to let the volunteers into the power station but Yamada and the others have been lobbying for the right to aid in the clean up. He says: "At this moment I can say that I am talking with many key government and Tepco people. But I am sorry I can't say any more at this moment. It is on the way but it is a very, very sensitive issue politically."

News out today that Japan understated the amount of radiation released in the early days after the tsunami and subsequent power failure.

As well a report finds a lack of independence at Japan's nuclear regulator. I believe I noted this to be a huge problem with the nuclear industry as it exists, earlier in this thread.
