Currently window shopping on Steam, is The Orange Box worth it? I've played HL2 but not Episode 1 & 2. Not interested in TF2.

It's either Portal for $10 or Portal + Episode 1 & 2 for $20.

if you liked HL2 youll like Ep1&2

Ep1 is a IMO bit bland event-wise, Ep2 is awesome.

Gave it a quick blast for an hour this morning before work. Nice enough so far, even though visually it looks pretty terrible imo. Bland textures (and low res) and the models in the opening bedroom look like something straight out of 1999. I'm on max everything/8xAA/16xAF but I actually had to go back into the video options afterwards just to check I didn't put the game on low detail by mistake heh. Truly the source engine is showing it's age now. Good animation though.

But yeah, graphics aren't too important in a game like this and I got into the middle of chapter 2. Pretty amusing humour and some basic tests out of the way, i'm sure it'll really open up when I play more.

One worrying factor from the steam forums is that the SP game takes an average of 4/5 hours to complete. There is also co-op to add to that, but pretty disappointing for a full priced sequel, especially since the first one was effectively free.

Looking forward to having a proper session with it tonight (and no doubt completing it, if those estimates are correct, sigh)

I read reports of it taking double that as well, so it might not be that bad.

There's always people just blasting through a game at breakneck speed and then complain that it's too short.

Haha, Metascore: 95 User score: 5.5 (55)

I was concerned about it being as short as the first but shrugged it off figuring the first one was probably only so short because it was free. I never did go back and do every challenge mode, just a few, so it's not like I really completed it anyways. I replayed the first a couple days ago, finished in under 2 hours, and I hardly remembered most of the experiments.

Also:

that's a bold claim a week before Portal 2 lands. what makes you say it's dated?
source now is hardly what source was when HL2 came out looks-wise and for sheer coherency with it's physics integration and weight given to object behaviour, it's still not topped by much else.

lol @ people 'discovering' that portal 2 uses a six year old game engine, as if valve kept that a closely-guarded secret until now

next revelation: minecraft "a bit blocky"

Low-res textures have absolutely nothing to do with the engine, either.

:dork: @ those thinking the textures show the engine's age
