Larry Crowne 0/10 If you need spousal penance this is the movie to take her to. Julia Roberts has totally lost any sex appeal.

Rise of the Apes 8.5/10
wow, totally not the gay fest I was expecting... this was the "Dark Night" of ape movies...seriously.
To take such a nonsense tired cliche and actually succeed in creating an engaging plot out of it takes skill, and these guys did as good as anyone could have.

If there was ever a movie that didn't need to be made, interesting.Tsakali wrote:Rise of the Apes 8.5/10

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - 9/10 Absolutely brilliant.
Bad Teacher - 3/10
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt.2 - 9/10 A well-shot end to the series.
Limitless - 6/10
Hubble (the Imax-based documentary) - 10/10 Some of the coolest footage and digital recreations I've ever seen. If you have any interest at all in space then this should be on your must-watch list.

Re: The last movie you saw
Why the fuck are people saying that Rise of the Apes was good? It was absolute garbage...really nothing more than a "smart pet proves that animals can be respected too" movie. I mean...seriously...what exactly did the apes rise to anyway? A fucking redwood tree? Ok...intelligent apes...so what? They outsmarted some cops (cops are not exactly the sharpest knives in any drawer) to cross the Golden Gate Bridge...and then climbed trees. There was no indication of how the apes "rose" to be the dominant species they were supposed to become in the later films...it sorta hinted at it in that the one ape spoke, but there was no indication of how they overcame any obstacles beyond a tranquilizer dart. If I was the chief of the San Francisco police, after watching what transpired on the bridge...and let's be honest, a large band of wild apes doesn't go unnoticed very long...I'd have gone in with tanks and gased the fuckers to death at my leisure.
Whoever enjoyed this film is probably clinging onto nostalgia as it sucked massive cock. Rise of the Apes = 5/10
The Lincoln Lawyer = 5/10 - Meh. It was even worse after you realized this movie had more endings than Return Of The King.
Cowboys And Aliens = 5/10 - I tried but really couldn't bring myself to like this movie.
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind = 5/10 - I turned it off half way through. Decent concept and nicely done, but I just didn't care about the main characters enough to want to finish watching it.
Oh yeah...Hubble 3D = 10/10 - as Torm has intimated, it's worth every minute of your time.

Yeah...I can see how I spoiled the movie by stating that apes like climbing trees and don't like cages.

A drawn out 7 hour movie featuring nothing but scene after scene of stupid shit that doesn't make sense but somehow looks cool in slo-mo. There were several scenes that I honestly didn't know what was going on but I found I didn't care because it was giant robots killing each other and vaporizing worthless extras.

Is Shia LaBeouf's career over yet? Can't fucking wait.

GONNAFISTYA, you might have missed something I suspect? My other half did. I am thinking it was so obviousGONNAFISTYA wrote:Why the fuck are people saying that Rise of the Apes was good?
Did you see in the credits, those yellow lines, the lab tech inhaling the virus, later coughing blood on the pilot?
The apes rose because we humans were overcome in the majority by a virus. Our numbers probably 1/100th of current and the apes rose to the dominant species on the planet.
I'll go between Tormentius & Tsakali on rating but liked it entirely, so a 9/10
BTW I am original Heston/Planet of the Apes (scifi) fan
I was looking forward to this one, so it is still on my listGONNAFISTYA wrote:

Super 8 - Another fun but weirdly sterile remake/reimagining/themerape from JJ Abrams. 6/10
Would've rated it higher but this time he's detail-trawling multiple IPs (Goonies/ET) instead of a single franchise (Star Trek) so whenever you recognise something, it's jarring rather than familiar. Everything from locations and lighting to costumes and the pudginess of cast members is carefully designed to evoke the old Donner/Spielberg movies - but the score is underwhelming and the emotional scenes are kind of overwrought and feel tacked on to the action. The conclusion/ending is weak and untidy, but that's a modern Hollywood standard so maybe it's not fair to pick on.
I don't know, slagging it off here because it just struck me as creepy in the same way that robotics does when it takes a trip to the uncanny valley - but if you haven't seen the films it's aping (or just don't have any attachment to them) then it's a good evening's entertainment.
X Men First Class - Almost as good as Captain America, mainly because of two really strong leads. 5/10
The supporting characters constantly threaten to knock this off course by being too ridiculous. The X-Men franchise has always been close to self-parody in a way that the comics only really get away with because they're comics. On-screen, it doesn't work so well.
Unrelated:
Just saw that Marcus Nispel is the director for Conan - hopefully it won't be as neutered/boring as his Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th remakes

Re: The last movie you saw
In July we saw these:
Transformers 3 in IMAX 3D
Harry Potter in IMAX 3D
Friends with benefits
Cowboys & Aliens
If you have a IMAX nearby that is the way to see a movie, Transformers used 3D very well in the fights and destruction scenes while Harry Potter was more subtle in using 3D, highlighting the school and battles rather than throwing things right at the audience.
Cowboys & Aliens was more western than SciFi but if you are a fan of westerns it satisfies.
Friends with Benefits is a chick movie, but it has Mila Kunis going for it so it didn't suck.

Tucker & Dale vs Evil.
Never heard of it, but stumbled across this one via imdb, as you do (Firefly's Alan Tudyk is in it).
Genuinely funny alternative take on the old "college kids terrorized by hillbillies in a forest" genre.
Usually these satires are fucking lame, but in this case, with a good script and quality acting, it results in a very enjoyable flick.

Harry Brown. 9/10. After the london riots, it brings home just how shit life is on those slum estates.
