OnLive
Re: OnLive
thx for that link. Signed up, who knows?
Even if it was laggy, it'd be cool to beta something that potentially groundbreaking.

Re: OnLive
Yeah I wish I could apply but Canadians are not cool enough
Re: OnLive
Applied. If I get in, I'll see if Linux users in the boonies have any luck with it.

Re: OnLive
I signed up under Leopard. Hopefully fewer people choose that and thus my odds are better.
Re: OnLive
lol another no0b concept soon to fail...
Re: OnLive
Well that's what people say but apparently the developers of the technology disagree.

[/quote]Steve Perlman, one of the founders of the OnLive streaming video game service unveiled at last week's GDC, has defended the innovations powering the PC gaming service, dismissing articles calling the technology "unworkable" as "ignorant."
While Perlman used that term specifically in regard to a Eurogamer editorial—"Why OnLive Can't Possibly Work"—the outlet isn't the only one questioning whether OnLive can deliver high-definition, perceptually real-time video game experiences without a console or PC. He tells the BBC that critics have not yet used the system, nor do they understand the technology behind it.
"We have nine of the largest game publishers in world signed up," Perlman said. "They have spent several years in some cases actually going and reviewing our technology before allowing us to associate with their company names and allowing us to have access to their first-tier franchises."
Re: OnLive
They can say whatever they want. Even if they do overcome the bandwidth issue, What about ping? When I hop on a game server, I can tell the difference between 30 ping and LAN. How can an algorithm lower your ping? Out of the many years of online gaming, the evolution of netcode, a company out of nowhere is going to wave a magic wand and make the ping issue go away?
What kind of hardware is it going to take to run this shit, and encode the video? What about the latency when encoding live video, especially in an HD format? Also to handle the number of people connecting and trying to play this shit?
Maybe it will work, but it sounds like bullshit to me.

Re: OnLive
if you can afford the fast reliable internet connection with no download cap then you can afford a decent video card and cpu.
4/5 of the world with substandard internet need not apply for this scamware

Read all the above and seen the promo vid. Does sound promising though (in a few years perhaps).DooMer wrote:They can say whatever they want. Re: OnLive
i think it can be done
but the quality will suffer from the things mentioned like screen demensions and image compresion and of cource the lag
still tho with those drawbacks i would think there will be a massive demand 4 it cuz of all the bored@work peeps that want to own some noobs
there are so many great familer games and so many gamers

You’re losing this, just stop.
Re: OnLive
It has just launched in the UK and I had a go on it. Horrible, laggy mess and visually, the quality is shite. The input lag IS noticable and makes FPS style games impossible. Worse yet, the moment I signed up, I was greeted to network errors every few seconds (my internet is with the fastest, most stable ISP in the UK), which pauses gameplay until it re-buffers.
The one thing I really do like is being able to snoop into other players games and see them in action. Obviously they're having just as much a horrible time as I am, but you can at least see a game in action before buying it. Just not on Onlive, obviously lul.
Anyway i'm sure the network dropouts are due to the high demand at the moment and theres a 30 minute free trial on most games. Oh and you can buy DX:HR for a quid if you want, amongst some other decent titles. Definite potential, but in it's current state, completely unusable for me.
