I installed an OEM 64-bit copy of windows 7 last night only to discover that, on its own, it was chewing up about 30GB of space. Clean install, formatted drive, wiped, etc. I googled around and most folks seem to say it's about 10GB.

I sense something is slightly off.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with patches and it's only 23GB and that's not even a clean installation.

x64 does take a bit more space, ~20GB. Do you have hibernation enabled? Hibernation reserves as much disk space as you have RAM.

Year old install of 7 Home Premium 64 bit and mine's almost 22GB. No hibernation. Have you checked to see what restore is taking up? I know it's a new install, but it could still be taking up some space.

Windows 7 pro, 64 bit, no hibernation, 18.8GB.

It's 2011, we (work) allow anything up to 40Gb for a standards client OS installation. Why sweat it? Storage is cheap as fuark and life is short.

It's on an 120GB SSD, so space is kind of at a premium. I'm not at home at the moment, but I can easily check restore points, but it's starting to sound like Windows 7 is just much heftier than I anticipated. Cest La vie. I'll just be making more use of symbolic links...or whatever windows 7 calls them.

Junctions.

If it's any consolation Win7's actual usage is usually lower than the sum of it's folder sizes, since stuff like WinSxS mis-reports (because it's kinda using junctions itself)

Win 7 Premium 64 bit takes 14.9 GB....not even one-tenth my porn collection.

Aw yeah. I deployed thin provisioning on our SAN today just to avoid having to buy HDDs for the next couple-a-monfs.

You can free up a few gigs of space by removing unnecessary Service Pack install files. Of course, these are needed to uninstall, but it's rare (and highly unadvised) to revert from a Service Pack. DISM.EXE works on Server 2008 OS's as well. Very handy.
