In effect, S. 1747 would remove overtime protection and compensation for virtually any worker directly employed in information technology.

I've already emailed both my Senators. I'd appreciate if any of you could do the same.

education, science, technology...the sooner they get rid of the lot, the better!

This is the american mantra. I'm at a loss for words to describe just how fucked this country is on a fundamental level.
When did it all start going downhill? How did this happen?

Could it be that this new world was embraced by self righteous, selfish hotheads of "then" modern europe? or was it something more recent?

Around the beginning of the 1980s when the religious right (and every nutter along those lines) started taking an active interest in politics and voted in Ronald Reagan. Then once he was elected the right wing systematically tore apart everything that was against their religion, whether that religion be of a denominational faith or of the free market.

Because dumb yanks keep listening to Republicans and other morons with bad ideas.

You already are exempt from overtime if you're "any employee who is a computer systems analyst, computer programmer, software engineer, or other similarly skilled worker," whose primary duties fall under categories including "systems analysis techniques and procedures," and "design, documentation, testing, creation, or modification of computer programs."

They're adding network, database and security specialists. You still get overtime if you make under $27.63/hr.

The real question is why are existing IT professionals exempt from OT if they're salaried or make over $27.63/hr?

I've never been at a job where a salaried co-worker can make OT. They are compensated in other means for "extra" work: floating days, bonus, vacation days, etc.

I'll take salaried work over hourly work any day. OT is bullshit since you can't count on it for your monthly finances, you can't depend on it for your loan applications, and you can bet your ass OT is the first thing cut when business is slow. Many businesses use OT as an excuse to have a pathetic base pay and overwork people. While I did work hourly, my salary fluctuated 25K between great and bad years. Fuck that noise.

Of course, there's the issue about whether market value for your field is adequate or not, or if they'll match your average OT income when they make you salaried. This could result in better base salaries all throughout.

I'm salary and got a 25% raise for allowing them to give me overtime work. This ruling wouldn't really change anything for me but it is bullshit to begin with.

Also, from what I've read, working overtime in exchange for time off later isn't actually legal. Curious if that is true.

Corporate lobbyists. Their money and constant presence in DC has a huge impact over a handful of citizens emailing and calling. Combine that with elected officials who can't keep up with the pace and scale of the modern world. And this idea that everyone is entitled to being right.

Who's benefitted more from that so far, you or your employee?

I'd say it is pretty even. Some weeks I actually do hit ~50 hours, some weeks I just get 50 hours worth of work done. The frustrating part about it is that if I do nights/weekends to get something done, it will sit waiting on the QA team for days/weeks. It is pretty mentally draining though after a while. I used to be the person who erased work from his brain at 5pm. For nine months now I haven't been able to turn off that switch anymore. I've been slacking a lot lately because of that.

Plus I listened to greed over sanity and picked up side work creating a company website. Be great when I finish that and get my weekends back.

That is straight up bullshit. I program as a hobby and I work in IT as a carreer. I've done manual labor before and it drove me to get an education to learn how to do this that I paid a lot of money to learn. So shit like this doesn't just make me angry it pisses me the fuck off.

If they passed something like this in Canada I would categorically refuse to do overtime. No fucking way, you want your password reset, pay me bitch.

I mean frankly, this is stirring the hornets nest, we have access to so much shit why on earth would you want to piss us off?

It's like trying to fuck over your own security guards who are protecting your billions of dollars... Guess what's gonna happen?

I feel your pain. I've been taking more and more work home with me lately and it's starting to take its toll. I keep fantasizing about the day I get my evenings back to myself.

I dated a blonde dumber than her. If my ex was driving and I asked her to "turn left" she'd need to look at her hands to figure out which side was left...it was something she could never understand fully.

And before you ask, she was hot and a nympho and no, you didn't want to talk to her about anything because - regardless of topic - the conversation would end quickly because she knew absolutely nothing about nothing.

Some people simply cannot be reached and you shouldn't try to anymore.

I have the same thing actually, it was a consious decision i made as a child. People would explain what was what and i remember thinking 'but if i turn slightly sideways what you say is left is not left for me anymore. This information is arbitrary and irrelevant and i shall forget everything you just told me'.

And now, many years later, i still have to think about what is left and what is right for a second or two every time, it fucking sucks :olo:

this guy is a propper asshole: posting a vid of him making fun of his wife.

and obviously she's not stupid (in the sense of being mentally redared) - notice how she's stumbling with several semi-plausible approaches - but heavily undereducated.
