I'm not 100% certain why platform vs. clip but it seems that platform pedals are more stable for the simple reason that at mach speed it's nearly impossible to re-clip if you 'click out,' which is a frequent occurrence on the bumps in my experience.
DB what do you do to stay in shape during mud season? I've got the itch but can't seem to find a clean trail. took a hard dump on the icebergs a few weekends back.

I kind of slip in the winter. The road bike goes on a turbo trainer and I do x3 45-60 min per week at 2% climb keeping the HR to 150-165bpm.

the wife bought me some Gore winter stuff so my mates and I get out at the weekend on the MTB XC trails dotted up and down the UK in the rain/snow/ice. I did a race A few months back which was great fun. Loads of huge water holes, ice and mud. I didnt do too bad, think I finished in the top 30% out of 300.

what a rutted technical nightmare. Reminds me of the LT MTB 50, 30 spots on the trail were crater ponds, and 1 section at altitude was capped with hike-a-bike slush/snow. What are you rocking these days, hardware wise?

Still have a Scott Genius.
It's 150mm all round. 2x10 setup with 22/36 which is working out very well after dropping the top ring in place of a bash guard. Took a few inches of the handlebars and run with 2.1 HighRollers all year round.
It's due for changing soon and i'm looking at a Orange 5 Pro or Scott Spark 30. I want to go from AM to XC as my down hilling days are over.

Gary Fisher Superfly Elite 100 29er, no hard downhilling for me, either. Bad luck on a bike a few too many times. Too many road deaths in my neighborhood (lol cellphones) this year, so not really into it just yet. I might try a dedicated path fixie (Trek District) or even a Velodrome / trials first.

please tell me you're kidding. the trek district site gives two 'advantages' to fixies: they're cheap, and they're low maintenance - i.e. fixies are the fleshlights of the bike world

not a fan of the 29-er, eh? it's not for everyone, but i found it to be a deal-sealer on the LT100. Shaved probably an hour off my time on what the boys in the hood call an "ultrawalker," as well. O, and fixies are swell for parking your shit in the rain and not having to clean / oil and adjust every square inch of bike. Just my .02, hate that shit.

Most of the pro racers I've seen on xc events seem to like them. I've heard they suck on technical descents and make you gay.
