Beyerdynamic MMX300

got them customized from the beyer site which cost more but I like how they turned out. Engraved with "Jack Bauer CTU"
In the future I foresee myself dropping way too much money on higher end equipment. but i'm fine with that

Frankly, I wouldn't bother. I had one built for me a few years back from a kit spec developed by some renowned british specialist in headphone amps. Cost a pretty penny with super dooper transistors, bells and whistles in the circuitry. I did lots of side by side comparison, plugging them into the amp, then plugging them into my normal NAD amp. I convinced myself there was a difference. I think there was, but so negligible it was barely worth the purchase. If you're already hearing tons of detail, you probably won't notice anything significantly better if at all. But if you do go ahead and buy one, let us know if there is a big difference. Maybe there are headphone amps out there which are amazing.andyman wrote: Just ordered a small amp for them to up the ante.
Got the amp for more volume, it isn't super expensive so I figured why not. another toy for meDRuM wrote:Frankly, I wouldn't bother. Nope, I know the guy that built it, he really knows his shit. I've spoken to hi fi enthusiasts and even retailers who told me I'd be hard pushed to hear the difference between a good normal stereo amp and a headphone amp, unless you're an absolute purist with amazing ears. In other words, don't believe the hype. Unless of course you're coming from a fisher price amp, then yes.andyman wrote:btw it sounds like you got sold something.
It depends, you can't just throw everything into one basket. It depends on the headphones, too. His are 32 ohm dynamic drivers, so they have a high sensitivity. Therefore an amp doesn't matter as much, but they will probably sound better with an amp than without.DRuM wrote:Frankly, I wouldn't bother.
