The new headphones

Post by andyman »

Wanted something I could use with my games too, and this looked to be the perfect choice (save for getting a separate mic). Holy fucking fuck i am floored ... can't take them off my head, everything sounds so damn awesome. When I listen to music I can always visualize what's going on and before, a snare was just a snare and a guitar note was just that. Now, i can hear every single rattler on the snare and see it in my head, hear every dent in the pick that gets caught on the string, can hear if the strings are dirty or not... it's just rediculous.... can hear the phlem in a singers throat... lovin it. Just ordered a small amp for them to up the ante.

Beyerdynamic MMX300

got them customized from the beyer site which cost more but I like how they turned out. Engraved with "Jack Bauer CTU" :olo: WIN WIN WIN WIN WIN

In the future I foresee myself dropping way too much money on higher end equipment. but i'm fine with that :)

Frankly, I wouldn't bother. I had one built for me a few years back from a kit spec developed by some renowned british specialist in headphone amps. Cost a pretty penny with super dooper transistors, bells and whistles in the circuitry. I did lots of side by side comparison, plugging them into the amp, then plugging them into my normal NAD amp. I convinced myself there was a difference. I think there was, but so negligible it was barely worth the purchase. If you're already hearing tons of detail, you probably won't notice anything significantly better if at all. But if you do go ahead and buy one, let us know if there is a big difference. Maybe there are headphone amps out there which are amazing.

Nice, welcome to your first pair of mid-fi headphones! There's a lot more to look for, if you're interested, though. Are you on head-fi?

Nope, I know the guy that built it, he really knows his shit. I've spoken to hi fi enthusiasts and even retailers who told me I'd be hard pushed to hear the difference between a good normal stereo amp and a headphone amp, unless you're an absolute purist with amazing ears. In other words, don't believe the hype. Unless of course you're coming from a fisher price amp, then yes.

It depends, you can't just throw everything into one basket. It depends on the headphones, too. His are 32 ohm dynamic drivers, so they have a high sensitivity. Therefore an amp doesn't matter as much, but they will probably sound better with an amp than without.

Your NAD amp probably has a nice built-in headphone amp. This means that you won't notice much of a difference between that and a good portable headphone amp. It's probably a lot better than going unamped, though.

I have three different headphone amps:

- Graham Slee Voyager (portable)
- Burson HA-160 (full-size discrete headphone amp)
- Cambridge Audio DacMagic Plus (integrated headphone amp/DAC)

Going unamped (Sansa Fuze MP3 player) to Graham Slee Voyager is a big difference. Going from the Voyager to the Burson is a very noticeable difference. It sounds a lot better. DacMagic Plus is a similar to the Voyager, but it's a bit better since it's full-size. The Burson also sounds better than DacMagic Plus, but it doesn't justify the extra expense for me.

I'm still keeping the Burson so that I can use it in the office when I'm gonna have a clean outlet. It's that much better than the Voyager.

The noticeable quality scale for headphone amps basically goes like this:

dedicated discrete full-size ($700) > integrated, built-in (good stereo receiver), or high-quality portable amp ($300) > unamped

I would say that you'd have a hard time distinguishing between amps in the same category.
