Olympic lulz

Post by Ryoki »

Read this article about the Olympics in the Guardian, sure makes me glad i'm not a British taxpayer... is it mostly true or is it mostly sensationalist, what say you Brits?

I remember quite the uproar in the Netherlands back when we were competing for the Olympic bid and it turned out the IOC demanded it's own special legislative powers for the duration of the games. It was found unconstitutional and i recall it managed to turn a lot of people against the whole idea of having the Olympics. I mean, aside from the fact that it costs an mindboggling amount of money while education, culture and healthcare sectors (to name but a few) are being heavily pruned with austerity measures in this time of crisis.

Kinda makes you sick and angry, don't it...
This means that, for the rest of the summer, London will effectively be "ruled" by the IOC. Enthusiasts for world government should take note. An unaccountable, self-validating body expects five-star hotels, chauffeur-driven BMWs, Soviet-style Zil lanes and all-green light phases for its thousands of "officials" and corporate hangers-on. It not only expects them, it gets them. It demanded and got its own legislative powers, under the 2006 London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act. Lord Coe does what the IOC tells him and passes the bill to George Osborne, who pays it. When the opening ceremony alone was £30m short (on a staggering budget of £60m), the cheque was promptly sent round.

The IOC is ever vigilant for its sponsors. Inspectors are to fan out across the capital, arresting anyone who uses the words "2012 Olympics" or any other associative phrase, for not paying Coe and the IOC a fortune in sponsorship fees. Jamie Oliver cannot hold an Olympics party in Victoria Park as he is a non-sponsor. Blogs, pictures or videos on YouTube or Facebook are banned. Anyone who so much as carries an unapproved bag, hat or shoe in a venue is banned.

Olympics, hosting them is nothing short of a national grade piss contest. Not too long ago they were thinking of just having them all in one place all the time...Greece, but I guess that didn't happen. Would make sense though, no matter what place they end up choosing it would really allow for top notch accommodations, since you don't have to recreate the wheel every 4 years.

You could still have a fancy new olympic stadium every 4 years if you wanted, at least the rest of the infrastructure would be already there.

The IOC is the biggest bunch of sleazy, greedy, corrupt bastards on the planet. There was a HUGE stink uncovered over land deals (IIRC), bribery, etc., in the run up to the games in Utah a few years ago. Gigantic fucking joke.

lol Olympics, etc.

Any city council that aspires to hold the Olypmic Games is fucking stupid. For some reason they think all the money they'll spend is actually worth it when there are literally dozens of examples of it not. Alot cities that have hosted the Olympic Games in the last 40 years lost a shit-ton of money in the deal and constructed a bunch of horribly designed and cheaply built "facilities" (at inflated prices of course) that did nothing but become abandoned eye-sores within 10 years of being built. There are exceptions, but not many.

I won't even mention how cynical and worthless the actual Olympic Games have become.

I dont understand why anyone would want to bid for it ?, there was an arguement not so long ago about an unfinished stadium, about what will happen to it when the olympics are over, one football team wanted to knock it down and start again and another team wanted to completely redesign the stadium (reducing capacity etc), both bids would mean they get it for a fraction of the price it cost to build and whos pocket does that come out of ?, all over a stadium that wasnt even half built yet that had no functional use past the entire summer it will be used for, its fucking retarded

the only good thing about it is that we beat the french, again

Olympics are fucking stupid as far as I'm concerned. Here in Vancouver we had to foot quite a hefty bill. There were multiple apartment towers built to house the athletes, which were then supposed to sell to the general public afterward to recoup costs. Of course, no one bought any, and they had to lower the prices considerably to get any attention. Of course tax payers footed the bill, no worries. :retard:

The double digit billions wasted on this shower of shit would have gone a long way towards helping britain out of recession. Most people are happy to watch it on TV anyway, hosted in some other sucker country. Oh and they unbanned UK 100m sprinter dwayne chambers from a lifetime drugs ban, so he can compete. Seriously, lol.

This.

Although I do have tickets to the MTB races on the 11/12th in Essex. That, the road cycling and time trial literally are the only events I'm going to take an interest in.

The horrendous logo killed the Olympics for a lot of people.
