Post by Tsakali »

welp, it's the beginning of the end for flash altogether.

when mobile devices don't support your content why would any rational web developer even touch it?

just in the nick of time i installed the flash player on my transformer pad on saturday, so at least i can still watch youtube vids in the browser when their shitty app crashes for the 9000th time that day

ffs you'd think google could make a decent app to play their own content on their own OS

Sidenote: Flash still runs on iOS and Android, you just have to load it as a native app using the AIR runtime as a precompiled wrapper.

Flash Player is dead though.

sure, you can get it to work, but as a developer, unless absolutely necessary I wouldn't willingly cut my potential traffic by 40%

ps
not sure what percentages are in play here but you get the point.

just in case apple fanboys are getting swollen heads, all you need to hack someone's apple account is name, billing address, and last four of a credit card (so one web search and two phone calls):

Well the advantage there is writing a single code-base to target multiple platforms and not have to learn all the nitty gritty details of Android and iOS. We're comparing native apps to websites but I'm just saying Flash itself is far from dead.

Then again, there's HTML5 which replaces Flash for most purposes, which works on all platforms (well, a little dodgy on Microsoft ones but that's just because they're morons).

Adobe made this announcement ages ago, they're just finally officially cutting the cord. Adobe has begrudgingly put their bets on HTML5 now too, they just need time to convert their development apps to support HTML5 while slowly letting Flash die. Flash is only still "alive" for the moment while they stall and try to jump ship.
