Professional Quake Hoster/Hosting Questions (Like a Gamehost

Post by uzi9mmauto »

 I was wondering for a few reasons as to what software do Game Hoster's use?
Some still allow one to run Quake 2, Quake 1 and naturally Quake 3 thru their server's software.
 I wouldn't mind getting a hold of this to run a listen? server or what for Quake 2 and Quake 3 if I get a FAST CABLE connection.
 Why should we depend on the 'other people' to see when/if will continue to play our beloved Quake 3 and its MODS.

As some of you know- I have hosted thru another Game Hoster these QUAKE III MODS
Jailbreak, :q3: NoGhost, :q3: BMA, :q3: Gridiron, :q3: Beryllium, :q3: Qpong and so on..

What I would LOVE to maybe do (With YOUR HELP) is to get this Software. I would love for people to have Great Memories of playing these again. History is important and likely some people's happier days too! :-)

Thanks!
MK

Its seems I MUST try and spell this out. (Going By The ....Answer I received)
My neighbor has a computer store with a room loaded with Servers.
(Clients who have domain may host thru them, filehost etc) Well we were talking about letting me run my Game server there as well. Before you ASSuME like before.

I would need this software or name to get it. Here is a display from GAMESERVERS.NET
Game server. Image
When I said hosting- I meant what i said and OBVIOUSLY I didnt mean thru the dam game itself. So when I or others log into the game server will see what we see in photo above.
This way I could Host different versions and games at once.

I dont care if the program works only for quake 1,2 and 3 or ALL the games like this one does in photo. Now of all places- the correct answer shouldnt be that far away.

TY

P.S. This way you or anyone who has a Quake III MOD could run it thru my server. At a very low cost and a lot of slots too. Instead of paying a lot $$ or trying to find the cheapest host and so on. This way we both are on the same team.

To be honest, your entire "question" is one garbled mess. You don't clearly specify what you want.

Anyway, I'll try to answer this at the best of my ability. The program in your screenshot looks like a webbased FTP client that allows you to upload files to a remote server. It doesn't have any specific connections to Quake 3.

So what your friend needs to do is make a folder on his server available through FTP, you should download an FTP client (no particular one, there are hundreds of different FTP clients. Since you're using Firefox, you might want to check out the FireFTP add-on). Your friend should give you the credentials to log in to the server and then you can upload your files to the server.

However, to actually run Quake 3 on there, you need desktop access to start the quake3.exe program. This can be achieved using something like remote desktop (RDP) or VNC. But if your friend is a server admin, he should know all this stuff already.

In short: what you seem to be asking about has nothing to do with Quake 3 itself. I suspect all you need is a way to get files on the server and run them. FTP in combination with RDP or VNC is the way to go.

Pretty much what Eraser said, an OS and the video game dedicated server software. That's all that is required on the software side. Maybe if you stop playing with font sizes and colours, and took the time to read what everyone is honestly telling you, you would understand. If there is a more specific question, you might want to think about how to phrase that and maybe provide examples of exactly what you are trying to do.

If you're wondering why YOU can't generally host a similar video game server at home, your residential connection typically lacks fast enough upload rates and simultaneous connections required for running a real dedicated server. You will need a dedicated T1 or T3 line at least, which will run you in the neighbourhood of $1000-$15000 a month. Not to mention a Cisco router to manage that, also very expensive.

This. You come off as either a moron or a thirteen year old. The two are not mutually exclusive, of course.

He keeps referring to GameServers. I had 2 DoD Source servers with them for a few years. They use Linux or Windows for
there Server Software. As to the exact version of Windows Server or Linux they use I have no idea. As for Administrating
the server its as you all have stated, its done thru an ftp client. I also used webhosting as a server for fast downloading of maps.
it had a server console used to admin the site but I still had to use an ftp client to upload maps to it.

He stated"I wouldn't mind getting a hold of this to run a listen? server or what for Quake 2 and Quake 3 if I get a FAST CABLE connection."
This is Copied right from Q3W Quake III Beginers Guide -

Listen Server
Listen Server mode allows the player to host a server from within the same instance of Quake III in which they are playing. When the listen server host player exits Quake III or returns to the main menu the server shuts down and disconnects any connected clients. To run a listen server in Quake III, choose the multiplayer menu. Click the "create" button at the bottom of the screen. You'll be shown a list of all the maps available for the gametype selected. Select the gametype you wish to play (Free For All, Team Deathmatch, CTF, 1on1 Tournament, etc) and select a map to play from the list. Click "next".

So dude You need to-
1- Learn the difference between Listen and Dedicated servers.
2- Get a better understanding of the English Language and
the use of puctuation to get your point across.
When people start using foul language, they
show just how immature and ignorant they really are.
That being said
3- GROW UP.

Here You can use this. Maybe it will help. http://dictionary.reference.com/
