figured we should have a proper thread up here instead with the straight FAQ instead of the messy other one.
DooM
(one, two, ultimate, final, various ports)

OK, here is my first minor contribution (believe me I'd be all over this if it wasn't for finals).
Game: Doom II--Zdoom, Jdoom, and Heretic
1. ZDOOM/HERETIC: Unless you've spent some time over at the zdoom forum, you might not notice that the current build of zdoom (1.23 beta 33) can play Heretic (this is a better platform that WHeretic). Just put the heretic wad in the same directory where zdoom and your other wads are located. You can use a zdoom launcher, but frankly, it is just easier to create a shortcut that reads (in the target field):
"C:\Program Files\Ultimate Doom for Windows 95\zdoom.exe" -file
(*NOTE: just use the path appropriate for your setup)
Then all you need to do is to leftclick once and drag the Heretic (or any other wad for that matter) onto the shortcut and release....zdoom now starts using that wad. So for anyone like me who can't get the zdoom launcher to work consistently, use this command line.
2. JDOOM/JHERETIC PAGEFAULTS: I've not used Jdoom for some time, simply because I consistently get page faults whenever I start it up. I've finally got it to work. I have an older soundcard (Montego II by Turtle Beach) that has A3D support, and that's been the problem. If you've got an older card (that the company no longer updates the drivers for) with A3D, go into your control panel, open up your soundcards' front-end menu, and on your A3D settings, DISABLE directsound hardware acceleration before playing Jdoom. This may be dependent on my old setup, but if you're having pf problems, try it out. Jdoom runs fine now.
