figured we should have a proper thread up here instead with the straight FAQ instead of the messy other one.

Game: Doom II--Zdoom, Jdoom, and Heretic

    1. ZDOOM/HERETIC: Unless you've spent some time over at the zdoom forum, you might not notice that the current build of zdoom (1.23 beta 33) can play Heretic (this is a better platform that WHeretic). Just put the heretic wad in the same directory where zdoom and your other wads are located. You can use a zdoom launcher, but frankly, it is just easier to create a shortcut that reads (in the target field):

    "C:\Program Files\Ultimate Doom for Windows 95\zdoom.exe" -file

(*NOTE: just use the path appropriate for your setup)

Then all you need to do is to leftclick once and drag the Heretic (or any other wad for that matter) onto the shortcut and release....zdoom now starts using that wad. So for anyone like me who can't get the zdoom launcher to work consistently, use this command line.

    2. JDOOM/JHERETIC PAGEFAULTS: I've not used Jdoom for some time, simply because I consistently get page faults whenever I start it up. I've finally got it to work. I have an older soundcard (Montego II by Turtle Beach) that has A3D support, and that's been the problem. If you've got an older card (that the company no longer updates the drivers for) with A3D, go into your control panel, open up your soundcards' front-end menu, and on your A3D settings, DISABLE directsound hardware acceleration before playing Jdoom. This may be dependent on my old setup, but if you're having pf problems, try it out. Jdoom runs fine now.

    Glquake command line paramaters.

either add these into a shortcut so the target looks like this:

    (for example)
    "C:\Quake\Quake.exe -width 800x600 -bpp 32"

or do the same thing from start>run or (shutter) Dos

    -width 800x600 (for changing resolution)
-bpp 16 (for 16 bit colour)
-bpp 32 (for 32 bit colour)

if you have problems running quake1 in winXp, try right clicking on quake.exe (or glquake.exe etc.) and goto compatability mode, and select "run in win98 mode". that might help, goes for other games aswell.

    Quake2

updates can be found at ftp://www.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake2

Problems with the Mission packs not installing.

simply copy the files off the Cd's into the appropriate directoris ("xatrix" for the reckoning and "roque" for ground zero), and if you want it to be a full install, copy the vidoes of the CD into xatrix/video or rogue/video to get all the movies and such.

--- Pumps the sound frequency up to 22050Hz. It sounds much better! (especially the Lightning gun)

(DRON: I'm adding this here because the thread you list above is broken)

For official GlQuake and WinQuake: error message "Out of handles"...note this is NOT an issue with DOS quake, and I can't speak to other quake engine modifications.

--I played Quake for almost 5 years before encountering this error, but after I consolidated 2 quake installations into one (mods n' such), it started becoming common. What this means is that you have more than 8 pak files you're trying to play with (this includes ones in an addon (-game) and/or mission packs (-rogue, -hipnotic). So if you are playing an addon or missionpack and you get this error, count up all the pak files associated with the standard Id1 and those associated with the addon/mission pack.

Solution: The released sourcecode has fixed this (according to the Quake Info Pool site), but if you don't have the time/inclination to download and recompile it all, you can either unpack all the pak files of the offending addon, or combine them into less pak files (so your grand total, including the standard quake paks, is 8 or less). You can go either route with a pak explorer program.
