In the anticipation of the dedicated server for linux i thought about playing around with setting up a dedicated server in my house.

I have very little knowledge of installing linux, almost none. I am familiar with Irix as that is the platform that I use at work, but seeing as SGI doesnt give support we have a guru there. SO when it comes to unix based OSs I can feel my way around in the dark but am not proficient.

I have a p3 500 512MBram with a 16gb hard drive and a Elsa Gladiac Ultra Gforce2 64mb vid. Currently has XP on it but I am going to wipe it.

Is this system capable of running a dedicated server? What version of linux should I use?

My gaming rig has a burner so creating an image is not a problem. The closet PC can boot from cd and floppy.

Any Linux gurus out there?

TIA

That would be plenty for a server. Not sure about Doom3, however. Where's VE? He probably knows...

Not sure if the hardware can run a doom 3 server.

I have mandrake 8 on a pentium 2 machine.
Installation was straight foward and easy
It also came with a driver so you can boot and install from the CD drive for older machines.
