Re: How to sidestep muscle memory?
The next match I totally got owned and was down to like 30% wih the rail. The thing is, I feel like I should be able to play that good all the time, but muscle memory is holding me back. I disagree. The difference is the opponent you're playing, not you being inconsistent. Better players will make ...

When it comes down to it, you can't really blame someone for doing anything that's legal in the game. If someone wants to camp, they can camp regardless of what you think about it. The same goes for using weapons like the BFG. Sorry if you don't like how someone plays, but if they aren't cheating, t...

Related to CTF, I have noticed something that can be frustrating at times. It seems that the area to pick-up the flag is smaller than it appears. There are many times when I think I’ve picked up the flag when I haven’t. Similarly, jump pads and power-ups don’t trigger at times when I feel they shoul...

Q4CTF puts the fun in fun
For all the nay Sayers about Quake 4 MP, when you get down to brass tacks, fun is fun. We scrimmaged Excite last night and we had 3 barn burner matches – the most exciting was this demo on Death before Dishonor. I think the game is exciting. Sure they could stand to improve something here or somethi...

To get better at anything, it’s important to train correctly. Someone could play FPS games for years and not make significant gains if they don’t train smart. The main thing is to always push yourself and face good competition. If the competition is usually worse, it’s easy to coast and not evolve. ...

Quake is gold standard for competitive game play. I remember when I first started playing QuakeWorld (Quake 1), I got my butt handed to me time and time again. And, all players are faced with a choice - step up or keep on stepping to the next game. I decided to keep playing till I could keep up and ...

The Quake series has sadly taken a hit for one reason only, imo. Most casual or amateur gamers become frustrated with Quake online because the seasoned players dominate them. Players play, get frustrated, and move on. Counter-strike appeals to so many because there’s not that feeling of despair and ...

Yes, I’m unimpressed with Q4Max and I think Caleague and others should just go with the default, vanilla mods. I don’t like the models just as much as the next person, but it’s the same for everyone and the mod needs to bring much more to the table than Q4Max does before we all switch to it. I’m not...

obviously none of you are even trying the config before posting True, I didn't try out any configs. Rather, I was just responding to the first post: thoughts after reading both and the replies from the second? Did I miss something? To play Devil's Advocate, though, there was a mod for Quake 2 CTF r...

I know a decent mapper who is making Q4CTF maps as we speak. I can point him to this thread. What are the issues with Unreal? I've thought about playing it because the community seems reasonably sized with the talent reasonably spread out, but the big deal breaker for me is there's too many weapons ...

You bring up some good points - I agree that health and armor is scarce and I'm also sick of falling 2 ft to lose 5 or 10 health. But using Q2CTF as a point of reference, the rail was never as big of an issue then as it is now because with the grapple, more emphasis was put on pursuit, instead of DM...

We’re touching on many issues in this thread and I’d like to air out my opinion on some of them. CTF has taken many steps backwards over the years and the crux of the problem is no grapple. If you could actually maneuver around the map (ala grapple), the rail wouldn’t be as big of a problem as it ha...

I’ve thought about this issue a lot and I think :icon15: and other gaming companies would be better served if they would enable options such as brightskins and simpleitems to improve visibility. Developers have commented that they are disappointed when they go to LAN competitions and see blurry scre...

But is that balance, or making everything the same? I think balance implies a wide range of weapon function, ability, and power. In a close battle, a SSG is probably more powerful and useful than a LG. At medium range, a LG may be better than a RG. At long range, a RG would be preferably to an RL. ...

Weapon balance in Quake 4 is dang near perfect - the super shot gun is a great weapon to have, especially at close range, and the nailgun and plasma gun are both unique and effective for the right situation. Quake 4 is not Quake 3 is not Quake 2 is not Quake 1. Let Quake 4 be Quake 4. It has its own...

1. Yes 2. 9/10 3. Good - graphics, game play, weapon balance is superb, Tourney Mode, Sudden death in both DM and CTF, projectile interaction with teleports, grenade interaction with jump pads, map selection is very good considering Multiple Player focus wasn't as high of a priority as Single Player...

TIPS: Fast Weapon Switching
I was dueling last night on the Fragging Yard 1 vs 1. I was by the rail gun while my opponent was in the teleport room near the hovering yellow armor. He was shooting hyperblasters @ me and switched to his lightning gun, but I was amazed, because he seemed to do it almost instantly - the stream of l...

What are some tips for getting your player from stopped to full speed as quickly as possible? Even though Quake 4 is relatively new, if anyone has some demos or could make some, that would be beneficial.
