Re: LCD is blurry
Patchwork remediation. 1. Moniteste 1 pixel horizontal-vertical scan lines at 4:3 native 1152x864 resolution (leaving clear type off). 2. Screen auto-adjust while full-screen. 3. Close moniteste. 4. Turn on Cleartype, manually set as desired. Still somewhat blurry, but easier on the eyes without ove...

Re: LCD is blurry
Windows 7. 1400x1050 has no redeeming value for me, it's for informational purposes mainly. Using a monitor testing utility I can see wider more distinct horizontal scan lines than vertical at my 1280x1024. My more subjective observation of text while moving windows across scan lines suggests these ...

LCD is blurry
Acer AL2017. 4:3 display 1400:1050 20" I'm outputting analog from 8mb shared Intel 82845g integrated video to an LCD using a VGA-VGA cord. Various res and refresh settings all produce blurry images and text, with the native 1400x1050 not supported by the hardware. I've attempted screen auto-adj...

Pretty responsive after a wipe and base install.
20" LCD was a nice unexpected upgrade.

Backup workstation questions
I'm receiving a Dell tower with 17" LCD for petty cash. A second workstation more than anything else. Specs: Intel Pentium IV 2.66Ghz 533FSB 1gb RAM 533 Dell mobo from 2003/2004 nameless IDE drive I'm looking to load Windows XP (or a stripped cousin) on it and use it mainly for office, stats, a...

Re: The health care thread
You pay a premium because the US is one of the few markets in which they can price without take-it-or-leave-it government negotiated discounts. That's a bit of stating the obvious, isn't it? After all, that's what this entire debate is about. The un-parsed paragraph makes the point that there's a l...

Re: The health care thread
R&D costs have always been given as the reason why we pay so much more for drugs here than other countries do. The fact that those costs are such a small part of pharma's budget belies that justification. Which is probably the point behind Fender's posting that. You pay a premium because the US...

14% of pharma budget goes to R&D http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/co ... 67257.html Pharma R&D can be both expensive and a small share of total operating expenses. The same firm might plausibly consume most remaining funds for other operations (legal, marketing, manufacturing, distribut...

Re: Only Solution to the Problems with the United States
Don't confuse negative trade balances with debt (public, private, or national). The former isn't a priori bad. More information is typically required to make that judgment (where bad means social welfare diminishing). However, US debt-to-GDP is fairly high at ~75% and its' rate of debt growth quite ...

Re: The health care thread
whatever the investment in R&D pharma companies make, the very least one can say is that their research would be impossible without research done by universities, whose work is freely available in journals etc. i don't know if US universities receive any public funding but UK ones do, which mea...

Re: The health care thread
Point 5 links to a piece on drug company profits, I was responding to that. I'll add that I missed the last portion of the article on Stiglitz's plan. Stiglitz's plan is simple. The governments of the Western world should establish a multi-billion dollar prize fund that will give payments to scienti...

Re: The health care thread
yes it is expensive, however 1. most countries with public healthcare pay 7-8% GDP instead of double that for the US; 2. a single publicly-funded system creates economies of scale impossible for HMOs; 3. a publicly funded system doesn't require an army of lawyers and bureaucrats to assess your clai...

Re: The health care thread
Given the legislative process behind any such bill, I worry about what may come out of congress. Single payer won't be cost-neutral to govt. accounts; insurance premiums will be replaced by some offsetting tax and ambiguous efficiency results. Ultimately however, save the switch-over structural cost...

BBC journo pontificates on his leave from post in America
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/f ... 176448.stm Shorter Webb: America is a land of wealth, opportunity, glutinous excess, and anachronistic 'stone age superstition'. America is the India of proud industrious societies. Britain is full of muted realists with introspected post-imperial wisdom; ...
