I played this through recently, just before Alyx came out, and it was a good romp.
So yeah, go for it if you want to revisit Half-Life. It's currently the best way to play the original story.

Ah, I've read a similar thing before.
Does make me wonder though, why Half-Life: Alyx then, and not Half-Life 3 on VR? Or (and maybe it's dumb to speculate about this without having seen the HL: Alyx ending) was Alyx a way to test the waters and are they developing a VR Half-Life 3 right now?

Yeah so that's not great. See Ep2 and Valve's track record.

Have you read the recent interview about Ep3 and why it was never made (or probably never will be)? Valve can get fucked when it comes to HL.
