Why would that kind of material be held in civilian polulations. Jesus Christ.

Re: Beirut
That reddit video makes it seem like a fireworks factory, or maybe that was munitions? It definitely seemed less catastrophic than the videos from afar. At any rate, crazy shit.
edit: Holy Christ, that last video is insane, seeing the pieces of the buildings lifting up into the air just before the blast wave hits them. It's like something out of a movie.

Re: Beirut
Apparently it might be stored sodium nitrate
Re: Beirut
After seeing all the videos from afar, the close-up video is the craziest. Mainly because it doesn’t seem that bad...

Abbas Ibrahim, the head of Lebanon’s General Security, said that “highly explosive materials” confiscated earlier had been stored at the site.

I like this bit...Transient wrote:Brace yourselves for the conspiracy theories. :miffed:
Without offering any evidence, US President Donald Trump said the US military believed the explosion was caused by a "bomb of some kind".
"They seem to think it was an attack," Mr Trump said.
Two US officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Reuters it was not clear where Mr Trump received his information.
They said initial information did not appear to show the explosion was an attack.

Re: Beirut
Yeah that's what it is. I looked into it and there was 800 tonnes of ammonium nitrate on the site in addition to 500 tonnes of potassium nitrate.

Re: Beirut
Apparently the Beirut one was something like 2,700 tons. Detonation velocity of NH4NO3 is 2.5km/s - that is fucking nuts

Wow... this years darwin awards are decided.Sparks from their welding work ignited a supply of fireworks, which had been stored next to the ammonium nitrate cache
Re: Beirut
So some dumbass contractor didn't bother to do a safety check before welding, and a week later the Lebanese government has all resigned.
Re: Beirut
That's simplifying it way too much.Transient wrote:So some dumbass contractor didn't bother to do a safety check before welding, and a week later the Lebanese government has all resigned.
First of all, the explosive material was never supposed to be there in the first place. Also, this explosion is what broke the proverbial camel's back. It's not like the Lebanese government was doing a good job before this.
Re: Beirut
I totally agree, I was deliberately simplifying it. I meant to point out the fragility of the government over there. There's a lot of it going around, these days.

12-minute video of a forensic analysis of the blast with a digital reconstruction. Quite interesting.

Re: Beirut
Fascinating what they've deduced from camera footage. Such a cacophony of negligence. I hope it helps the families bring who's accountable to justice.
3d model looks really interesting, I'll have a gander at it.
