Just got a new EP from Australian dude Plini, called Sunhead. Not sure what you'd call it. Jazz metal? Pretty weird shit, but I am digging it. EP was only $4 or something, steal of a deal. Dude plays a headless guitar, reminds me of Holdsworth.

Nice guitar, and very well played :)
I appreciate the technical expertise of guys like this, and would have been a complete fanboy when I was younger.

Through that last vid's channel I came upon this:

They are pretty good, imo. They seem to be pretty young, yet they already have some real good groove going together.
Their music reminds of the german band Ton Steine Scherben, a leftist Berlin-based band during the 70s, mid 80s.
Isolation Berlin's lyrics in these songs are nowhere near political though, they are just about everyday twen's (love-) life. But they are written in a very poetical way, just like The Scherben or Rio Reiser used to with his lyrics.
Gonna keep an eye on them.

Some of my favourite Metallica songs aren't actually Metallica songs, but covers.
Specifically, Diamond Head's "The Prince" and "Am I Evil?".

I'd even go so far as to say they're better than the originals... until now.

Diamond Head have just released a completely re-recorded version of their 1979 album "Lightning to the Nations", which includes both of those.
The original recordings have messy production with overly "glammy" vocals, but the new recordings benefit massively from modern production and new vocals.
They have also benefitted from learning from the Metallica covers.

In all honesty, I still probably prefer the Metallica covers, but these are certainly the best versions recorded by Diamond Head, and the whole album is a lot easier to listen to now.

I've been listening on YouTube Music over here.

Mat, I am with you 100% on this one. I remember listening to those covers as a kid and thinking "this is how these songs are supposed to sound". It's amazing what a profound difference the mixing and production makes from the 70s to the 90s.

Any Metallica top10 playlist of mine will include at least 5 covers, and four of those will be Diamond Head songs. Seems like DH are one of those bands that were criminally mismanaged, they should have been so much bigger!

I'm halfway through the re-recorded Lightning to the Nations album now (on spotify too), and it's giving me all the good feels! What a great release.

I've also been enjoying DH latest album (The Coffin Train) thanks to Spotify's release radar playlist, which kindled a 2020 Metal playlist that I've been seeding with old and new stuff.

Heh, if you're in to a bit of thrash, give Onslaught's new album a shot too, Generation Antichrist.
I'm not sure yet if it's quite as good as their previous two albums, VI and Sounds of Violence, but I like what I've heard so far.

The "Oompah" factor that a lot of thrash tends to exhibit is still there, but Onslaught aren't as big offenders as some other bands out there.

His cover of Heartbeats is amazing - I think it was in a Sony advert with a load of coloured balls bouncing down a hill

Oh, another thrash remaster from this year that's well worth a listen is Mr. Bungle's "The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny".
Still got the utmost admiration for Mike Patton as a vocalist. His range is insane.

I came to explore Junip through a movie. I'm pretty sure it was their song "Turn to the Assassin" which was used in a crime/drama- movie about cannabis- plantations in Oregon or Washington-state. It was a good movie, quite bizarre at some points. I just can't figure out/find the title of that movie.

Spotify did me another turn and recommended this one - new album from a prog rock band that has been around (with a few lineup changes!) since the 70s

This is the first track, highly recommend a listen to the whole album.
It's like Pink Floyd with shades of George Harrison. really good.

Damn nice find, rare to come by new prog these days.

I've always been somewhat of a fan of the music from Supergiant Games (Bastion, Transistor, Pyre and Hades). Darren Korb, composer of the music, does a brilliant job of delivering songs that both have a profound impact on the games but emotionally when played by themselves as well. Especially the songs where Ashley Barrett adds her angelic voice parts to the mix are astounding.

To my great joy, Supergiant Games has released a 10th anniversary album with orchestrated versions of Korb's songs with Barrett. It's glorious.
Best of all, it's available for free on YouTube and Spotify (and probably other streaming services as well).
It can also be ordered as (translucent red) vinyl edition.
