Pretty sure that's against the consumer law, at least here in Euroland.

It may be against the law, but since there's no branche organization they can do as they please. I mean, no one's going to spend time or money on a court case over a 60 dollar purchase.

Can get Trading Standards to look into them in the UK if they refused you, if they side with customer then EA would'nt have much of a leg to stand on. Dunno what other countries have but the best thing you can do is try and get a charge back from your bank for the purchase.

Maxis takes the blame, says onlineonly was not EAs decision.

So while EA has been saying always-online is needed because large amounts of calculations are done on their servers, and therefore impossible for them to patch out the online requirement.. A maxis insider spills some beans

There are definitely some quirks in the system that need to be ironed out. If I could fine my sims for making illegal U-turns, my budget problems would be nonexistant.

Turns out a lot of my issues stem from one huge fuckup on Maxis' part: http://answers.ea.com/t5/Miscellaneous- ... ncnhrrwyxk

now I've seen that there about 2983 different versions of that game.. which of those is actually good? Anyone know?

Sounds like problems that should've been discovered in a simple QA session, no?

So much for the always online thing being an integral part of the game:

Quote:
Most importantly, UKAzzer was able to disable SimCity's disconnection timer, thus setting it to unlimited. Tests have shown SimCity kicks you out after around 20 minutes of offline play.

There are restrictions when doing this, of course. Access to SimCity's region features isn't possible, as you'd expect, and if you want to save your city you have to reconnect to the servers. But the video is our clearest indication yet that some kind of offline mode might be possible for the controversial game.

"oh, did we say offline mode wasn't possible ? We meant it was, but we chose not to include it."

Quote:
So, could we have built a subset offline mode? Yes. But we rejected that idea because it didn't fit with our vision. We did not focus on the "single city in isolation" that we have delivered in past SimCities. We recognize that there are fans – people who love the original SimCity – who want that. But we're also hearing from thousands of people who are playing across regions, trading, communicating and loving the Always-Connected functionality. The SimCity we delivered captures the magic of its heritage but catches up with ever-improving technology.

Keep digging that hole, guys, you're doing great.

By now they're past the point where they can say "ok, we've fucked things up and we're sorry about it" and look good because of it. They've been patching lies with lies and it all just turned too ugly for consolidation.

The game automatically stops working after a maximum of 20 mins if connection with the internets is lost..
"it will take significant engineering to include an offline mode", so said EA.

oh.. that's not true either;
Quote:
The code is here. "Simply commenting out Line #22 defeats the force disconnect," says the person who posted it. The removal allows offline play indefinitely.

"significant engineering" :olo:

And still poor fuckers (try to) play this.
I applaud and pitty them.

Seriously, if you pay good money for a product and get so fucked over, stop, try to get your money back, and never buy anything from them again.

But people still give money to EA by the bucketload, companies like Bioware get enhanced by having such a big brand backing them :dork:

I wish they would burn like THQ so that the IPs can get taken up by people who give a shit :( (not thinking about the redundancies obv :/ )

w3rd. be sure not to confuse devs with publishers here though. in this case, it's mostly maxis who's fucking it all up.

all the original devs from Maxis moved on anyway, fuck 'm.

Aaargh, so infuriating to give your best, only to have it fucked up by "higher ups".
In my experience, that goes for a lot of jobs, btw, not only game dev :(

This "free game" that EA is offering as an apology is fucking bullshit. They're digital copies, so it costs EA nothing. Plus, how many of those games offer microtransactions? Win-win for EA. :disgust:

The list isn't all that great, either. Bejeweled 3? Are you kidding me? :olo:

Battlefield 3
Dead Space 3
Mass Effect 3
Medal of Honor: Warfighter
SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition
Need for Speed: Most Wanted
Bejeweled 3
Plants vs Zombies

The new SimCity doesn't work, so they're giving you a copy of SimCity 4 so that you can play that instead?

rofl
not as bad as what Konami did with Silent Hill HD for x360.
that was broken beyond belief - crashes, missing shaders, left/right audio channels flipped (lol). They said releasing a patch was too expensive so instead they offered a free game of your choice. One of which was.. Silent Hill HD PS3.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe Microsoft imposes a fee on each patch release? Or limiting one patch per _____ weeks/months/etc.?

They didn't want to pay the fee to have Microsoft's servers deliver the patch, it sounds like.

I think there was a similar issue with Magika or another game like that.

Info here:

http://games.slashdot.org/story/12/02/1 ... osts-40000

$40,000 to issue a patch on XBox 360.

Same for ps3. But, the first patch is free (only fair) and they didn't even make that.
So they were purely talking about internal costs.
