Yeah, everyone thinks they're clever for coming up with the same Corona quip. It's not even accurate; the virus is called Covid-19.

As a big MotoGP fan I'm disappointed that the first two races of the 2020 season (which should've started next weekend) are cancelled because of travel restrictions due to covid-19. I hope those bloody Texans will keep their borders open for the 3rd race next month.

That's weird because the Australian F1 is still on and that's a much bigger event than any MotoGP race.

Australia hasn't imposed any travel restrictions I guess.
Also, not sure how this is with F1, but like 2/3rds of the MotoGP paddock crew and staff consists of either Italians or Japanese folk, two countries that have been among those that were hit hardest by the virus. Qatar actually has travel restrictions specifically against people flying in from Italy, so there you go.

A snippet from the Wiki article on the Spanish Flu:
Quote:
It is estimated that one third of the global population was infected, and the World Health Organization estimates that 2–3% of those who were infected died (case-fatality ratio). Estimates vary as to the total number who died. An estimate from 1991 says it killed 25–39 million people.

That's about the same ratio as Corvid19's estimated mortality rate right?
BUT: I think we handle it quite well yet. 90.000 infected in 3 months doesn't really sound alarming to small me. But what do I know?
No numbers from India or Africa yet. I'm almost certain they have infected people there. Those people may just not have the luxury or time to go visit an informed doctor or get tested.
Well, 250 this morning in Germany. The number doubled within 2 or 3 days.
Still planning to visit the Therapy? concert on march 21st. Kinda ironic.

Spanish flu was especially deadly because of poor hygiene standards, lack of resources, ineffective hospitalization, and malnourishment. It also affected young, healthy adults because it was the height of globalization and most people hadn't seen avian flu before.

If you're healthy and don't live in a shithole third-world country, you'll be fine. Sorry gwamps :olo:

Yes, that is right.

We are at the height of (civil) globalization right now.

There's this guy Christian Drosden seen more and more often on german public TV lately. He is an expert on viruses from one of Germany's largest and most respected hospitals, the Charité in Berlin. He is an expert on viruses/epidemics/pandemics, professor and generally sounds absolutely honest in what he says when interviewed for public broadcast.

I try to get my own interpretations out of these translations. He always says that what is known at one point in time could change over the course of a week. He is brutally honest and not at all up for sensationalizing.

"We have to get the 1:3 infection rate down to 1:1." - Stagnation, no more spread of the virus.
"If 1:3 keeps going we will hit our (hospital-)capacity-ceiling within 6 months."
"We have to spread those numbers of new infections over a course of 24 months. That, we can handle."

"People die of old age. Every year 850.000 people die of symptoms of old age in Germany. Sicknesses in combination with weakened immune system, weak hearts, lungs. Cancer. ... Corvid19's tolls will not drastically change those numbers. Just slightly."

"From what we have observed so far together with the WHO the lethality-over-age curve looks similar to a W."
Infants and toddlers have not had the time to generate a fully functional immune system. They might die from just a severe bronchitis. Corvid19 attacks the respiratory system first; then might spread to organs especially the lungs as it seems.
Elderly people are hit by most of the same criteria. Their age and also especially their individual way of live has weakened their immune system in regards to respiratory infections and diseases.
But also middle aged people, full time in the workforce seem to be pretty vulnerable. Working outdoors in harsh conditions, stress and other factors could be relevant.

All of the bigger trade fairs have already been cancelled or delayed in Germany.
You know what hasn't been cancelled?
-Oktoberfest
-Big stadium concerts
-The european football championship that will be played out all over europe this year. Mass migration of thousands of football fans all over europe.

Greedy fucks.

... we wonder how it spreads so quickly and from the Australian front....

Quote:
Melbourne GP clinic closed after doctor tests positive for coronavirus.

A doctor who recently returned from the US and since treated dozens of patients has become Victoria's 11th confirmed coronavirus case, health authorities have said.State Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said the GP was confirmed to have the virus last night, six days after returning from overseas, and was now recovering at home. The doctor, from the Toorak Clinic in Malvern Road, consulted about 70 patients between March 2 and yesterday, Ms Mikakos said

Key points:

• The GP treated about 70 patients over five days at the Toorak Clinic in Malvern Road along with two nursing home patients
• The clinic has been temporarily closed and the nursing home residents isolated in their rooms
• All patients seen by the doctor and clinic staff are required to self-isolate for two weeks

If anything I'd be buying now, the virus will be gone in a year and markets will surge again.
