It's "clever" but not "intelligent"? And you expected a horror thriller to be "more intelligent"?

You, sir, are a fucking retard who's opinions should forever be ignored.

Olympus has fallen.

So much ridiculous. It's Die Hard + Rambo's retarded luv baby with a bunch of flag waving nonsense.
Can't imagine even the reddest of rednecks getting a patriotic boner over this.
Still, finished it because of all the hilarity, so 5.5/10.

I was pleasantly surprised by its originality, but I certainly wasn't expecting something intelligent (whatever the fuck that means).
Thought it basically would be a generic Evil Dead knockoff, but then things turned sideways, which was cool.

i read a lot of praise about it playing with genre conventions in a clever way, etc.

it did and i was pleased with the film but i hoped for more: the two main jokes are the dedoubled perspective (and this idea is used quite well; for example to shed light on the fact that the audience derives pleasure from watching the protagonists suffer) and the interference of the surveillance crew to generate the cliché behaviour (this was a lot of fun :D - pheromone fog, etc.).

i was however expecting another twist on the concept for the last third.

but instead of offering something new for the finale they simply played out what was hinted at in the first two thirds and added some boring action scenes.

so while it started fresh and clever it became stupid in the last act.

[ and i don't think a particular genre automatically generates stupid output. ]

Oh yeah, Some guy who kills people.

Odd one this.
Murder and mayhem, some comedy, some sentimental drama at times.
It feels like a Kevin Smith movie, only with more direction and purpose.
Quite enjoyed it.

Oppenheimer was on the Daily Show last week. Can't wait to watch - a great study of the human animal.

Ryoki wrote:
The Act of Killing 8/10

A British documentary maker goes to Indonesia to speak to the perpetrators of the 1950-60 genocide. He finds a few of em, astonishingly they all tell him proudly about how they killed people and stole their shit... "Some of them weren't even communists" one guys admits laughing; "We just wanted their things". Most of the former killers are now powerful men in positions of influence, protected by gangsters and the state. They appear to have no regrets at all, actually being quite proud of saving their country from the communists.

So the documentary maker challenges them to recreate the attrocities they commited and film them, in a scene and a genre of their own choosing. He gets the help of a local TV studio and off they go.

The results are completely and utterly fucking mental; we see a twisted musical, a psychotic nightmare scene, a 50's style gangster hollywood scene, etc. It's a sickening mindfuck, though what's interesting is that doing this is for a few of them opening up a floodgate of old wounds... the last scene has one of the perpetrators walking around the area where he and his buddies killed hundreds, dry heaving and becoming utterly distraught. "Have i sinned?" he asks. Well no fucking shit dude.

Powerful, powerful stuff. See this (instead of the latest superhero movie, you uncultured swine).

Stealth

Sure you've seen it but here is a brief hint. US Navy creates a futuristic fighter jet piloted by an artificial intelligence

What can I say? Seemed 'B' grade in the first 1/4 but picked up somewhat.
I wouldn't say well worth watching but I'd never seen and don't need top again.

Most of the cast I'd never seen but there were some surprise (Australian)appearances. Richard Roxburgh, John Waters & Megan Gale.

Interesting: 6/10

interestingly enough, some of the most successful movies have a cast never seen before. I think it allows you to be immersed in the character's story without being affected by previous associations of a well known actor. Makes things feel more genuine.

Kinda has that 'first time feeling' thing working for 'em.

Yeah, I agree. Example, Ben Afleck is the new Batman. I won't be able to see anyone except Ben. He not a character actor like Bale is. Bad choice

The Bible (2013)

A tele-movie, 10-hour, five-part, mini-series and not bad either.
Yes you had to sit through ten hours but every week I was looking forward to the story unfolding, so get a chance, give it a go

IMDB

Yes, Biblical .. 7/10

Bring back Michael Keaton !, Bale got quote boring anyway, between him and Bane I thought I was watching an episode of the Clangers with all 3 movies riding on Heath Ledgers awesome. Dunno what Affleck will be like, I thought it was funny when I heard but you can bet your ass he won't be the worst and if they get Matt Damon to play Robin they've already got me sold :D

Yeah....Elysium was such a huge disappointment. After seeing it in IMAX last week I watched a shitty cam torrent of it the other day and, without the beautiful visuals, the film simply does not hold up as an interesting or compelling movie....it's just so fucking boring. Even the "action" is boring. Shitty acting, one-dimensional characters. Meh...I'm revising my score from a 6/10 to a 4/10. Only watch it in IMAX.

Then forget you ever saw it. Trust me, it won't be that difficult.

It's kinda funny that I watched Oblivion to "get primed" for Elysium and Oblivion turned out to be a much better movie.

Bale's Batman could easily have had a movie tie-in for throat lozenges.

I completely agree, it was really awful. It felt like the story was cheesy textbook Hollywood summer sci-fi blockbuster wannabe. IMO any worse, it would've actually became so bad that it was good, if only it didn't take itself so seriously. The effects were good, but they could've at least tried to make it more interesting to watch.

In comparison, Pacific Rim was not a good movie by any means, but it was much better than Esylium. At least it wasn't boring me to the point that I regretted coming to see it and actually wanted to walk out and do something else with my evening.

Elysium

Yep, I duly trotted off to the cinema today.

Look, I do love most all sci fi, not the super natural stuff and yes it is hardly science fiction :smirk: but I found Elysium a little below the mark as to my expectations.

CGI was about it. People have critiqued enough above; suffice to say I was let down.

5/10

Edit: Spelling x 2

I was afraid of that. this looked like the first movie to take my kid to but after seeing some things and hearing about all the changes they did during production my expectations are very low.

Watched 3 over the weekend.

The new Evil Dead, which was okay, but suffered from being rather... generic. I love the original movies, and this just lacked their character. There's something underground and edgy about the originals, and I much prefer the over-the-top use of prosthetics, where this one is more about make-up. Sure, it has some genuinely icky moments, but it also takes itself a little too seriously, and the direct references to the originals just felt like the writers ticking boxes.

Seven Psychopaths, which was a fun movie with some great performances from the cast. Sam Rockwell, Colin Farrell and Christopher Walken are fab. And Tom Waits made a brilliant psycho. He just LOOKS nutso. Lots of fun dialogue, although maybe a little ham-fisted at times.

And finally Trance. Tense and interesting, it follows a character who is involved in a painting theft and subsequently loses his memory after being injured during said theft. A hypnotherapist is roped in to help him recover his memories and thus reveal where the painting now is.
James McAvoy's swiftly becoming one to watch.

The original Evil Dead was simply a descent into madness, and the audience witnessed it through the character's eyes with all the crazy cinematography and over-the-top insanity. The new Evil Dead is just a bunch of angry demons making people due horrific shit to themselves and others...more gore/torture porn ala Saw and other garbage like it. The remake had terrific special effects and thankfully no CG blood, but a deadpan (and detached) presentation of what was going on, therefore making it so boring in comparison.

The films really have nothing in common besides the cabin, the deadites and the book.

The Iceman = 8/10 - Mr Shannon gives another example of why he's a scary individual only an idiot would fuck with. Based on a true story and probably not true, but a compelling, well-made film and the best mob movie based on a true story since Kill The Irishman. Worth a watch for sure.

We're The Millers = 7/10 - A seriously funny movie. Jennifer Aniston is so fucking hot.

* Jack the Giant Slayer - 7 / 10

Solid. Some funny scenes like Evan Mac Gregor getting rolled up as pastry. Some boring action. Nice finishing move.

* Total Recall - 6/10

I liked the some parts of the action scenes withoug guns and vehicles. Compared to other action movies their use of space was pretty entertaining. Especially that slide into the descending elevator through the top. Ace idea.

The rest of the action was boring. Story boring. Characters flat. Etc.

Nice visuals, though.

* Moonrise Kingdom 9/10

Loved it. Awesome in every respect.

i thought Jack the Giant Slayer was a huge turd (saw it on a plane), but whatever.

Mud - very good. like The Client, but without trying to be cute. i can see why Rotten Tomatoes has it at 98% critics.
