As you might know the base game of the new Unreal Tournament has been released and it's playable in multiplayer. Everyone with a current or former UE4 license can develop content for this game.

Your level should only feature basic geometry without textures and must be playable online. Your focus is to create a level that's fun to play without worrying about the visuals. You are free to decide how you are going to do that. Pick your game mode, add whatever you like to make sure that people enjoy playing against each other. Whitebox levels should contain minimal detail but this shouldn’t limit you if you want to go crazy.

This challenge will run from 01-09-14 to 28-09-14. The goal of this challenge is not to win prizes but to get familiar with UE4. We encourage you to submit your map on the Unreal site so that if your work is good enough, you might have a chance that it gets picked up.

UT4 will likely have everything that people want due to its open design. I am personally leaning in the direction of robust competitive 1 v 1.

There is a certain degree of irony in those maps... they all look like early Q3A geocomp maps... (not that this is bad, I like such maps)... but for a nextgen engine they look very much like 10 years old (with prettier shaders maybe and better lighting).

And the only map there that looks like a UT-ish map is the one by Castle... and the map I liked (by Chris "2d-Chris" Kay), like the majority did, is actually pretty much in Halo style (pimped slightly). On further thinking Mass Effect also comes to mind in style. So nothing so far that screams "NEW engine"... or "gone where no mapper has gone before".

(To be clear I like most of the maps, and I could not do a better job either.)

And the geometry looks like actual brushwork... maybe brushwork is making a comeback :toothy: that would be great for old-school folks like myself...

Hey AEon,

You do realize that Whitebox means an alpha build with zero eye candy right?

I do not really need to realize this since Castle had some and the other map I mentioned did too.

That's because they went beyond what was required. Regardless, neither entry is a showcase for the new engine. Not by a long shot.
Good news is, that UE4 still heavily supports brushwork as you can see in all the great submissions!
