I know this is Quake blasphemy, but...

I downloaded the UT Pre Alpha after seeing the vid below. In game looks pretty much like the video. I haven't played a lot of the newer games (just got a new laptop) so I was amazed at the quality of the graphics. The details when you get in close to walls and rocks was pretty impressive. Anyone taken a look at this?

Unreal is cool, always liked the music and the style - it's just that the movement sucks =/ It's unplayable.

i loved Onslaught in UT2K4. the movement is a little more sluggish than in Q3A but i never had a problem with it

also, super awesome graphics in a fast twitch shooter are pointless (SW:BF are you listening?); you don't have time to stop and admire the self-shadowing and gloss on a fucking leaf while someone's trying to take your head off. that level of graphic detail would work better on a slower, more tactical shooter like DayZ, Squad, Battle Royale etc.

this looks fucking awesome (SW:BF 4k graphics mod), but do you really have time to stop and admire it in-game? why can't DayZ look this good? ffuuu-

OT: I do have to say, the way those leaves look and the lighting... if you took away the gun, I could say that this was a photo.

I haven't played the new UT. Might be interesting to play around with the dev tools.

I disagree. The general impression of realism you get isn't limited to moments where you stand still to admire your surroundings. You can't possibly claim that during gameplay, you don't see the difference between Quake 3 and SW:BF because it's all moving too fast.

Having said that, you could argue that more visual detail detracts from the subject at hand: your opponent (hence the r_picmip whores in Q3) but that's a different discussion altogether.

that's the 4k mod.
Then there is this one:

The author stated that it's literally unplayable though, like 10fps tops. Does make for purdy pictures.

I love how this came up in this thread, the graphics in UT4 is obviously not even close AND you can do way more settings in UT4 too if you don't like things =)

the screenshot i posted is some way beyond a "general impression of realism". it's the level of realism that demands that you stop and admire the scenery. you don't have time for that in fast twitch shooters. hence my suggestion that this level of realism would be more suitable for a slower game. at no point did i suggest that 1999-level graphics would be fine for SWBF or any other modern shooter (and in any case, people tend to turn down the gfx anyway for the extra frames, even without mods)

Firstly thank you surgeon62 for the topic.

I downloaded UT4 yesterday and was impressed. I am an old Unreal fan from way back. I remember waiting outside the store to get my CD.

I will be off again to admire and speaking of admire...

I quite often stop to admire the scenery and get blasted :smirk:
