Nah it will not, snapmap is like DUPLO while radiant is lego-technik.
You cant build your own geometry. Its just a console-tool.
I think there wont be any id game in the future that will have a real editor, those guys want to do and sell their own stuff as dlc.
Money, money, money... :(

Well actually...

id commented on why they didnt release actual mod tools and opted for a modular approach:

Quote:
the biggest factor is that the technology that allows us to look great at 100+ FPS makes creating levels, creating art and bringing it all together at run-time makes exposing that to players very difficult. Our levels are very large because "bake" our textures/lighting to a certain extent. That takes a huge computer farm on our side that mod makers just don't have access to. And even if they did, they would need to be able to distribute a multiple-GB file just to share a map (upload and download).

Is the user willing to download a 6gb map file someone created at home - at the offchance they had a render farm in the basement - only to find out it's another soso q3dm6 remake?

Snapmap and all its components (of which there are a lot, and they keep adding btw!) allow for pretty diverse creations. Sure, the top layer is just the same rooms connected to eachother but if you take the time to dig deeper into the repository you'd find excellent maps and mods of complexity that wouldn't be available so short after a game's release.

Also, re: money money money; all of this is free. The two mappacks they released would have been monetized with or without snapmap. Take a look at Team Arena for example. A game that was done better and prettier before, yet still gobbled up by the community.

It's easy to hate but sometimes you just have to take a step back and look at it from a different perspective.

SnapMap is actually a very good thing.
The demands and skills required to build a Doom map are immense. Giving a low level entry like SnapMap (that has a surprising amount of depth) only enriches the level editing possibilities.

Yes you can do really alot cool and crazy stuff with SM, but you cant do a own layout for a room.
And i understand that they have to work with that pre-compiled modul stuff. If you just were able to make a simple brush and to put a floor texture on that brush. or some premade balcony modules that you can connect. i dont want to hate on SM, im sure alot of people have super fun with it.

Thank you all for your posts! I've got the only question left: if SM "has a surprising amount of depth", will someone have a chance to remake some old stuff most similar with original? For example, if I want to remake DM6, but SM's library don't have elements, that look nearly "the same" with Quake1's?

Check youtube for Doom remake maps; The DoomGuy I think the user's name is.
It will also take away the myth that you can't do own room layouts.

Aaah jeah you can do some stuff with blocking-volumes.. Its just ugly as fuck!
Yeah, try to rebuild Q3DM6 with that! Have Fun... :D :D :D
Im not intrested in SP stuff anyway... They should boost the MP cause its pretty good!

Ok.

Q3DM6 has also been rebuilt in Halo Forge, a far less flexible map editor than SnapMap.

But if remaking q3dm6 is part of the criteria then one thing is obvious: if mapping is being killed it's not because of SnapMap, but because of the lack of creativity from the authors.

Authors of the tools or the maps?
The round does not fit the square, that DM6 remake is impressive, but its more a hack than a map when you talk about snapmap and design. Its like one of those Custom-Mariokart-Wii-Tracks, i really really respect the work -but it would look nicer if the guy could texture it the way he want, and put trims the way he want and add models/modules where he want.
Back OP -yeah, maybe it will be the last Editor we will see for Id-techs, and maybe its better this way. :(
But i would love a radiant-style editor for QC <3 <3 <3

What you and others seem to misunderstand here is that there is no radiant style editor for idTech5 or idTech6 because the techniques, methods and workflow involved with creating levels for those engines is completely different from the brush based techniques in Quake 3 and, to a certain extent, Doom 3.

Sure i know... Idstudio wasnt that cool too. :tear:
But is there such a huge difference in engines today?
Why is epic able to pull out a editor for UE4 and id is not?
Did they reinvented the wheel? :olo:

I think it won't touch such thing as Quake3 or Quake4 or DOOM3 mapping... Sure newer games will have more attraction to new players, but these old classic games won't die. If I will ever have children, after some desired amount of years I would show them what such 90's games looked like and how they played like. And of course show them how such development looked like. If they will be like me, the game will catch 'em just like me :) Never gonna stop playing the old classics :D :D
