I ran q3 for years on Win2k and got 100 fps easily, and after I do a clean install of XP Pro and install quake the fucking game can barely even run the opening movie. The game runs at like 2-3 fps and it takes about 30 seconds for the drop down menu to drop down after I hit the tilda key.

I installed the newest Detonators, Point Release, Motherboard Drivers, etc and it still does this.

I have a 1ghz AMD Athlon, ApolloKT133A motherboard, Geforce 2 Ultra 64 MB, blah blah blah. Help?

RAM amount would be helpful. Did you ever think you computer couldn't run XP very well?

I wouldn't recommend any less than 512 on XP. It'll run on 384, but I wouldn't expect to have very much running.

edit: I just turned everything off in startup for pretty clean boot, rebooted and checked my memory. I was already using 256 mb just to run windows. That doesn't leave a lot to play with. But honestly, it sounds like you may have other problems. End of my $.02 :)

What would happen if you tried to open Photoshop or anything that requires more than a Mb of ram though. I've booted it with 128, but that's about all I could do with it. Anything I tried to open would take forever and crash shortly after.

Everything ran fine =o

Had photoshop, and dreamweaver both running, coding my website, winamp open, no problems. I have no idea how, because it's kind of hard to believe it runs on this thing.

I really don't see how, but stranger things have happened. One in a million I guess.

I can run XP Pro well on a 300MHz, 256MB, 6 GB HDD laptop and it isnt the smoothest or fastest, but it works quite well

That doesn't surprise me as much. I ran it on a 600mhz machine smoothly. It had 512 also but I could run it on 128 or 256. Just like I said, it always was real unstable.

Yeah your RAM definetly isn't the problem, unless its bad or something. Reinstall q3 if you haven't already. GL

What I was thinking, that doesn't really act like it's running out of ram if it won't even start properly.

Have you tried going back to an older det version? I noticed sometimes the dets wouldn't agree with my GF2. Since then I've switched to ATI so I don't know how the new ones act.
