So I got some new work, and they expect me to use a Mac (i.e. they shipped me a MacBook to use for work).

However, their internal mail is only accessible on the VPN, and they don't do IMAP, so I'm currently using Apple Mail, which is kinda poop.

So my question is, is there a mail client that's advisable to use, or is the system integration of the Mac mail client worth more than any advantage gained by using another client? Are there even decent POP mail clients anymore, now that most people are using webmail?

I still use Eudora on the Mac. There's now an open source edition ( https://wiki.mozilla.org/Eudora_OSE ) that is based off of Thunderbird + an extension, but I find it kind of 'meh.' On the other hand, using the final 'commercial' version, as I am, might give you 1990s flashbacks.

Well, after dicking around, I went with Thunderbird because it was the least bad.

Honestly, what I'd like is some way to search my mail that isn't useless. But forgoing that, Thunderbird was at least able to export the messages to text files in bulk where I can chew on them.

Basically, the problem I had with Mail was that at this place we get huge exception logs emailed to us every couple of hours from production (I didn't come up with this plan...). And Thunderbird is at least able to save a bunch of messages at once as the raw message source text. With Mail I have to do this one at a time, and it defaults to RTF, so I have to perform a bunch of click bullshit to save the 50 odd messages a day we get...

And I get to be that guy, and use EnigMail to send PGP signed mail to everyone else.

What's wrong with the indexed search in Apple Mail? It's lightning fast and certainly beats the ridiculous old Outlooks full text search that takes about ten hours to wade through one year worth of mail.
