I played the full game many moons ago ( SP only) , in fact, it was in 1975. :paranoid:
Anyway, I wanted to remind myself of how the game played and sounded, so I downloaded shareware demo quake_sw. It has various exe files and I installed it via a dos type install.bat. Can't get the game to work though. Any ideas?

The readme says this:

" Running Quake
-------------

DOS: To launch Quake from the DOS Prompt, go to the Quake directory and
simply type "QUAKE" <ENTER>. (no quotes)

Windows 95: To launch Quake in single player mode, double click on the file
QUAKE.EXE From Windows Explorer. "

Double clicking on anything in the folder doesn't start the game. I tried the windows XP command prompt and it came up with this:

C:\>cd quake_sw

C:\QUAKE_SW>quake.exe
Quake v1.06
Locked 1 Mb image
Locked 11 Mb data

Give winquake or - even better - darkplaces a try. The original quake1.exe is a DOS-only executable.

Thanks for the tips but is there no way I can run a demo of the original, unmodded quake?
I wanna stroll through an original map with nothing improved.

FuhQuake is a lamed up Quakeworld client.

Drum - you may want to look into FitzQuake or ProQuake, both engines have features aimed for original DOS quake functionality.

I just want to play a bit of the original, untouched quake, not even a hint of mod and not net play :tear:

Anyway, these mods seem to require the full game to be installed, or require another mod installed which asks for the full game to be installed.

Not sure about the demo, but with the full game you can install it using setup.exe I believe and then delete OpenGl32.dll and it works in XP.

Fitzquake does jack squat to the game, only allowing you to up the resolution and adds some fixes/stuff you won't recognize in the game.

Yeah I knew about the voodoo thing. Just been quite a while and couldn't remember if it would work for winquake.
