has a game ever scared/startled the shit out of you?
has a game ever scared/startled the shit out of you?
Brought this up in Indigo, but figured I'd start a thread about it.
Good evening my friends.
Do any of you have recollections/remembrances of games that may have brought you great suspense or fright?
I remember the first resident evil, walking down a hall, and having one of those spider things crash through the window. we were in college, a number of guys and girls in the room drinking and playing this game in the dark (well watching me play it.)
We all shat ourselves.
Also, playing the game Nocturne. A few parts of that game. And, lastly, the Clive Barker game "Undying"...scared the bejesus out of me at times.

hehe...that game was 'groundbreaking' when it came out. I remember mainstream media coverage about it.werldhed wrote:There were a couple of disturbing and heart stopping moments in Phantasmagoria way back when.
A kid I went to school with actually bought some of the memorabilia from that game from Sierra in an auction...they were actually auctioning off the lace teddy or nightgown or whatever the blonde gal wore, as well as her jeans. He bought some pointer thingy like a conductor would use (can't remember what those things are called right now for some reason).
Anyone remember the 7th guest and its follow up the 11th hour?
11th hour was scary at times, and some of the puzzles were like MENSA application problems.
the one and only scary moment I had in a game was in the original Unreal SP when I found myself in a narrow corridor and the lights started going out from the far end one by one till everythign was pitch black and all of a sudden this growling noise started comming from the other end of the hall.
that for me was mint

The original Doom, 1st episode....you enter an empty room and saddle up to the blue key card sitting all by itself on the far wall. A few steps from it and the lights go out, the door behind you closes, and you hear imps growling from in front and in back of you. That gave me a small poop in my Swiss hiking shorts.
For the most part, I found Phant. to be disappointing because it just got too goofy-weird as the game went on. Some of the early parts were a bit creepy, though.tnf wrote:hehe...that game was 'groundbreaking' when it came out. There was a part in Tomb Raider where you were walking in this little valley and all of a sudden a T-rex comes charging out of the darkness at you. I nearly downloaded in my pants.
The entrance to the crypt at the beginning of RtCW where you walk thorugh the door and a couple undead critters jump at you from behind got me good, too.
Thanks to Doom 3 I'm now pretty much immune to the monster closet effect.

Also unreal (the first one that was single player) - there was a classic scene where you're walking through a hallway with overhead flourescents, and then the door shuts behind you, and the lights go off one by one. Then you come face to face with that predator type monster for the first time. fuckin a

seriously - play system shock 2 if you haven't.
oh - the white chamber had some horrifying moments:

that vaguely rings a bell - both the scene and the fear...Hannibal wrote:The original Doom, 1st episode....you enter an empty room and saddle up to the blue key card sitting all by itself on the far wall. Thief 3's Shalebridge Cradle creates one of the spookiest atmospheres in any game ever; in general, it has you trying to back away from the screen, it gets so spooky.
But then, to have something attack you from behind that you just knocked down a few seconds earlier just scares you senseless.
The original AvP has soooo many jumpy parts it's not even funny.
In Shadowman on the N64, there's a bit where you track one of the serial killers down to an abandoned hotel.
At one point, the guy jumped down in front of me through a hole in the ceiling.
That had me screaming like a schoolgirl.
The first fiend encounter in original Quake is always a classic.
The first time you meet a chainsaw nutter in Resident Evil 4...

Aye. I think i played it once and got to that part in the kitechen with the zombie that walks down the steps and opens the door in the cinematic... I played for a few mins after that and just gave up and turned it off i couldn't handle it any more. This was at an age where all my other games included big bright bouncing plumbers and multicolour animals, so...CrinklyArse wrote:Resident Evil was the first thing that came to mind. Freaky shit! :icon28:
I still heard the fucking zombie noises after when i went to bed... Didn' help that i showed my dad the game before and every time he went for a piss he would drag his leg about and make zombie noises, scratching at my door... Fucking bugger...

Resident Evil made me jump when i played it way back when. dogs rhrough windows ==
Resident Evil 2 didnt at all though. it was very predictable where the scares would be.
REmake made me feel uneasy a lot of times, but also, boo-scares. theyre fun for about 3 seconds.
Silent Hill series however, made me not want to sleep. its one of those horrors that doesnt leave your mind for days. psychological twistfest
