Interstellar - Muuuuurph!/10 - enjoyable, looked amazing, but very flawed

Nolan's attempt to ground the film in 'the power of love' seemed clunky (especially compared to Inception) - though not as clunky as the Wachowskis in the two Matrix sequels). that said, critics making the all-too-fashionable complaint about 'expositional' dialogue are off the mark. if there hadn't been any, the audience would have walked out thinking 'wtf just happened?'

the scene where they talk about the 'corrected' account of the Apollo missions was fucking hilarious

come to think of it: dust bowl world where people believe the moon landings were faked. is Nolan trying to tell us that the future is Geoff? :olo:

Calvary.
Thoroughly enjoyable and very well shot. Brendan Gleeson was great as ever and it was interesting seeing Littlefinger turn up in a supporting role.

The opening dialogue definitely grabs the attention too.

The Guard is worth a watch too if you like Gleeson.

Salvation - 8/10 - gritty Danish take on the classic wild west revenge story

Taken 3 - cock/10

Stretch - 6/10 - dumb but good for a few laughs, like Geoff.

Contagion (2011)

Caught this the other night. Interesting story about the worldwide spread of a virus.

Stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Elliott Gould & others

Interesting because I thought it would have ended sooner. Yes, the world and the movie :smirk:
I thought such a event would travel a little quicker.
Not a bad movie as it did hold me to the end.

6/10

Roger Ebert seemed to like it...

I can see how it might not be for everyone though.

Divergent (2014)

What no review here at Q3W  I am surprised.

OK, a good sci-fi IMO and worth the time
7.5/10

From the Internet Movie Database
Quote:
In a world divided by factions based on virtues, Tris learns she's Divergent and won't fit in. When she discovers a plot to destroy Divergents, Tris and the mysterious Four must find out what makes Divergents dangerous before it's too late.

The Astronaut Farmer (2006)

I picked up what appeared to be an interesting movie from the local library (thinking of you lars 63 :) )
An ex astronaut now farmer builds his own rocket and ventures to space, despite the government's threats to stop him.

I picked up because of the cover. It depicted an astronaut riding a horse? Shades of Planet of the Apes.

I saw Billy Bob Thornton in the star role and was surprised by the appearance of Bruce Dern. He starred in one of my favourite sci fi movies, Silent Running (1972). Bruce Willis also make an 'uncredited' appearance as a space shuttle astronaut. Shades of Armageddon (1998).

A little slow but worth the watch IMO. 6/10

IMDB

PS: Thinking; I watched on the PC but will see it again on my big TV so it must be OK

probably no review because it sounds like a heavy handed, politically correct morality tale

It was alright, I remember it being slow and awkward to get into but it built up good and I enjoyed it. Just don't expect anything fantastic.

I'm gonna watch it again now the sequels out n all, as I tuned out during the first half of the movie I missed a lot of plot.

Maze runner and hunger games are the better flicks though, I was pretty impressed by both of them after putting them off for so long and ended up watching through lack of choice.

In a 3 part series - part 1 will introduce the oppressive regime, part 2 will show the struggle and part 3 will... what you said.

Ex Machina - 8/10
A couple days after watching it and I'm still thinking about it's ending and the characters in the film.
While it might sound odd, I enjoyed that the movie actually focused more on the human actors rather than the AI despite being a sci-fi movie with plenty of opportunity to slather the whole thing in CGI.
The movie in a nutshell: dude gets assigned to conduct a Turing test on another dude's AI.

a bro would never do a Turing test on another dude's AI

that's just rude

I thought it was predictable and even a little boring.

Montage of Heck - 8/10 - major nostalgia trip, and painfully candid at times (i.e. watching Kurt Cobain nodding off high on heroin while holding his baby). Impressed how the story was told as if we didn't know the ending, rather than just being aimed at his eventual suicide like some Greek tragedy

shame they didn't get Dave Grohl's contribution in time though

Monster University 7/10

A movie with a deeper narrative that really touches upon the ethical considerations of.... err, no, it's just a silly Pixar movie. It's a prequel to Monsters Inc, so if you enjoyed that, you'll enjoy this one as well.
