Christmas of Discontent

Post by lars63 »

1,500 check-in staff, baggage handlers and cargo crew will strike for 48 hours
Unite said the staff were striking because of a long-running pay dispute
Tory MPs labelled Unite's Len McCluskey 'the Grinch who stole Christmas' more:

yep every time someone goes on strike you can always rely on the Tories and their chums at the Daily Fail (amongst others) to demonise them just for wanting half-decent working conditions

in before "boo hoo i don't get to strike and it's Christmas"

I am not flying in the next few weeks but they tend to strike here at this time of year.

I'm kind of on the fence about things like these. Striking is a right people have, but striking when you're responsible for public transport during the Christmas season means that your dispute spoils over into unrelated people's personal lives. That's kind of a shitty thing to do.

I'm generally with the Union on this, and I think people have the right to strike precisely so their action can highlight just how important individual workers are to the lives of millions.

But I hope that Union heads are planning ahead. See, the DLR emphasises that an automated public transport system works, and it can't be too long until this level of automation gets rolled out on a larger scale.

You'll find a lot of Londoners wishing this to happen sooner rather than later so the strikes disappear. But there's very little talk of what will become of all those who would be made redundant because of increased automation. And this is definitely not a case of "if", but "when".

so they should only strike when it has minimal impact? that makes no sense

that's like saying people should be free to speak their mind, so long as it isn't controversial or """offensive"""
