Cloverfield?

Never heard of that one
Is it one of those hand held 'handy cam ones" I avoid?

I didn't like how you saw everything coming a mile away. you knew he was going to wake her, you knew the bartender was going to tell her, you knew the crew member was going to die, you knew there was going to be some lame climatic scene where she comes back to him and you knew he wasn't going to die at the end.

the whole we have no time to wake another crew member to help because there was no time and then how there was only one medbay stasis bed on a ship of 5k. they should've ended it when them both going back into stasis and them waking up to live on the planet. he basically sentenced her to death and she got over it because she had no choice.

Agreed but I would have scored it 5/10 not 3/10

Arrival - 6/10 - daft premise, but fairly enjoyable and doesn't outstay its welcome

Was right up my street, but not for everyone I'd imagine. It can be a bit cliche.

I watched it after seeing your post.
The trailer made it look like the movie was very aware of how cliché it was and making things so over-the-top to make it awesome again. Unfortunately, it all ended up being just a cliché though.
Having said that, it's definitely an enjoyable popcorn romp if you have a free evening to kill. The action is pretty solid and the special effects more than decent. After seeing this, I was thinking, a movie with this visual style would make a pretty decent Gears of War movie. Everything's big, bulky and bombastic which is exactly what a GoW movie would need.

Aye, I really don't mind cliche films though if they end up being solid and not too convoluted. Reminds me of the 80s action flicks where the action takes centre stage, I was very aware that some people would hate it though -

The bit where he Macgyvered the weapons was borderline even for me

It's what you described about GoW that made me like it a lot, the style of the movie with the action sequences. That peer scene was top shit imo.

I thought it was a shame they felt the need to try and explain the science. The movie would have been a lot more interesting if they kept the menace mysterious.

Yeah, at one point they
conveniently forgot their nemeses were invisible, as they could see them while their spotlight tank was in shambles
but ok :)

That was the let down for me, apparently the original script had this and the ghosts were radioactive, was also set in NY.

Kong: Skull Island

Fun monster romp, 7.5/10

Strangely
John C. Reilly was the best actor, everyone else was fairly mediocre. Overall it was much better than Godzilla and the two films are in the same monsterverse.

Ghost in the Shell - 5/10

Visuals and cinematography were excellent and the Blade Runneresque city was cool but lacked any real life. The story was flat and simple, would've been a lot better if it dealt with the moral dilemmas of human augmentation but clearly they wanted the film accessible to simpletons and weebs that wanted to stare at Scarlett's butt.

Alice - Through the looking glass 4.5/10
Wasn't nearly as enjoyable as the first one. They took the first movie's characters and blended them into this lacklustre backstory that has nothing to do with the original literature. Johnny Depp's role as the Mad Hatter wasn't nearly as satisfying either. The first movie was more enjoyable because it introduced all these characters that brought some spice to the table, but now these characters are known and they bring nothing new. SFX was decent but that's pretty much all it had going for it.

Rogue One - 5/10 - huge disappointment. story was ok, but the music was sub-standard and the main character actress was terrible, not a patch on Daisy Ridley

the CGI Tarkin and Leia made me LOL tho
