BMW has Xdrive for the all-wheel drive people. Though they are prone to frequent breakdowns and pricey to fix, they are on the lower end of the price range when it comes to luxury vehicles.

Both would be better than a 140i... That is, if they even sold the 140i in Canada which they do not. A lot of you folks across the pond also don't realize the cost of BMW ownership in the North American region. They're very pricy here and maintenance is a bitch because only specialized dealers and garages know how to service them. Plus a rear wheel drive vehicle in the winter is an absolute nightmare. Both the STI and RS are AWD vehicles which is a factor in what vehicle I'm going to go for next. I'm still negotiating with the dealership for the STI at this point, they're asking too much for it, I think I can get them to put the price down.

What do you drive now that you're getting an STi?

Right now I've been driving a Nissan Frontier like an old grandpa. I bought it used and it's got some electrical issues coming over the horizon I don't want to deal with. It was nice to haul my dirtbikes around but I drive a lot for work as well and it's starting to wear thin.

I'm not sure if the 140i has an xdrive option or do they offer that for all their vehicles? Either way, the STI is a done deal, I got a pretty wicked deal on this one and convinced them to drop the sticker price by 3k. I'll hopefully pick it up this afternoon! It's a 2013 with low km's which pleases me, I prefer the look of them vs the newer ones and the reviews I've watched complain the newer ones have a lot of the fun watered down on them to make power delivery more linear as opposed to that kick you get when the turbo spins up with this one. I've always wanted this car so I should enjoy this for a while, all that's left is to find some sweet gold enkei's to swap with the black ones on there now.

And yeah, Audi's are fun but they're also a pain to own up here, no dealerships, specialized garages etc... wouldn't be so bad if I lived down south like Gwamps. In a few years from now when I get bored of the STI I'll start looking for the limited edition RS with 400bhp.

Looks suspiciously a lot like an akrapovich (sp?) exhaust... Make a video, I wanna hear what it sounds like! :) You also get a power commander? Pretty often you'll lose power when you swap the exhaust without one...

The Akrapovic exhaust for my bike looks a little different:

It also costs a little different. My exhausts is €515 for the entire system, Akrapovic costs over €1100. Not sure about a power commander yet. Those things are bloody expensive and I'm gonna ride my bike for a bit first to feel if I notice much of a difference.

Here's a video of someone with the 2019 naked version of the bike I have with the same exhaust. Note that the stock exhaust on the 2019 version of the bike sounds noticably gruntier than on my 2016 model, so the difference for me will be even bigger.

Accounts from multiple friends (BMW owners) and a few tow truck drivers say BMW (not just x-drive) are prone to breakdown. Maybe they are of better quality in the UK. Not so much here in the states.

That is interesting; I would guess that depending on model you'd either have one manufactured in the USA or Mexico?

BMW cars produced in Europe are renown for being pretty much bullet proof. Take even a moment to look after them and they will last a life time over here.

Should be a good change then :) Enjoy the car!

Although I doubt you'll want a Ford Focus RS after ;)

All cars built in a third-world shithole like the US or Mexico are garbage.

You'd expect a company like BMW to uphold certain quality standards worldwide. Honestly, I'm much more inclined to attribute this to YGP's misinformed hearsay knowledge than BMW actually being shit.

Mines an 8 speed x drive. All Bmw autos use a gearbox made by an American company, even M series.

It's a quality standard that only lasts as long as the 4-year/50,000 mile warranty. There's a saying in North America that you should never buy an out-of-warranty BMW. Same goes for Mercedes or Audi just because they're so expensive to repair. You can see it in resale values, F10 M5 for example. E60 M5 is an extreme case.

Also unfortunately the S-series engines usually have some sort of design flaw that makes them timebombs. For example, S55 crank hub.

Yeah... that's the reputation they have here in Canada as well. It's funny too cause asian imports don't have that problem except maybe Kia.

Been enjoying the STI all weekend. Spent about 100$ in fuel just cruising around lol.

It's tempting... I want dark gold rims, that'll be something I do for sure. But in terms of performance I'm hesitant because the plan is to sell the car in 3 - 4 years time and move up to a Focus RS or something better. That said, a Tomei Ti Expreme exhaust sounds so spectacular it's difficult not to buy one... I could listen to that turbo all day long. I just worry about losing value because of modifications. I also need to purchase a service manual as I might pre-emptively replace the piston rods in the engine with titanium counterparts, apparently the stock ones aren't all that great.

I've been at this company for a year so I asked for a raise based on performance and got a 7% increase. The perks are pretty great and it's consistently named one of, if not the best, workplaces in all of Canada based on competitive pay and job satisfaction. I make $30K more here than I did working as a lead designer for a multi-billion dollar sports broadcasting company where the management was atrocious and they mostly hired sociopaths :olo:

Sounds fun! I enjoy UI/UX a lot as part of my job, it's like the cherry on top after designing a good back-end :)

Do you like it? How long have you been in this profession?

It's been 7 years since I graduated from design school and in that time I've been switching roles from company to company. Started in advertising and art direction, then went into broadcast design for studios and live sports, then freelanced couple years as a digital/print designer before deciding to go full-time at this company. I kinda grew into this role and enjoy the challenge of learning as I go, so far so good :)
