Greatest country in the world :olo:

Quote:
Thirteen years ago, a group of U.S. public health officials came up with a plan to address what they regarded as one of the medical system’s crucial vulnerabilities: a shortage of ventilators.

The breathing-assistance machines tended to be bulky, expensive and limited in number. The plan was to build a large fleet of inexpensive portable devices to deploy in a flu pandemic or another crisis.

Money was budgeted. A federal contract was signed. Work got underway.

And then things suddenly veered off course. A multibillion-dollar maker of medical devices bought the small California company that had been hired to design the new machines. The project ultimately produced zero ventilators.

This won’t come as a surprise to any of you, but id Software officially cancelled QuakeCon 2020 today, saying “gathering is the last thing any of us should be doing right now”.

In a statement posted on the con’s site, id say the show—due to take place in August—just can’t be put together at the moment. Even were restrictions on gatherings to have been lifted by then, given the lockdown situation right now “it will not be possible to complete the work and planning with partners, vendors, volunteers, and others that is required to make QuakeCon a success”

Probably me if I haven't already had it... I had symptoms of something last week but they went away quickly, none of the symptoms at the time suggested covid but they've today advised other symptoms that might also be covid. All I had was a runny nose and my head felt congested and I had to go to the bathroom a lot. No unusual cough, shortness of breath or fever so I assumed it was just a normal cold.. Hoping that's all it was.

Not necessarily. My job is essential infrastructure (I’ve got a letter and I.D. that will validate my travel and exclusion to the SIP). So unfortunately I still have some unwanted contact with people and facilities...

Pence has just announced that the US is on the same trajectory as Italy; Italy has 60 million people...the USA 327 million...

That is a lot of dead people, brehs. Please stay safe.

I was trying to work out what 'Pence' was and then came across the article here on the subject.

I've been on paid leave for the last two weeks... not work from home, but get paid to do nothing at home. It's nice that I'm getting paid, but I'm also getting stir crazy, and I can't really travel anywhere to go climbing. Geoff's life must be so boring, I don't know how he hasn't already drowned himself in his above-ground pool.

The B-list politicians we've got doing the coronavirus updates in the UK (now that the main guys are in lockdown) are a pile of shit wankers.

The point he's trying to make is, you only get "confirmed" cases from testing. However, testing doesn't and never will tell you how bad the situation is. Deaths on the other hand will. Right now the UK, Spain, France and Italy (population of approx 240 million vs 320 million US) have nearly 30,000 of the nearly 49,000 global deaths. :toothy:

Yes that's how confirmed cases work.

Did you really just use a big toothy grin smiley there when talking about 30,000 deaths? You've always been a twat gramps, but that's fucking abysmal.

Yeah, he's actually gloating over the fact that the UK, Spain, France and Italy have more dead people due to a viral outbreak than the US.

If people in other countries aren't being tested or not being tested at the same rate, then they're going to have less confirmed cases.

BTW, that emoji doesn't look like it's smiling at all. It looks to me like it's wincing in pain. Losing 30,000 people is awful. And fuck you too.

Bellend? Says the fucktard condemning others before looking at his own back yard. It couldn't be more obvious that more deaths per capita equals more infections or worse health care. Neither of which should encourage you to berate another country. This is bad for everyone.

Meanwhile, the west is begging Cuban doctors to save them. Even with the illegal sanctions, Cuba is responding in the name of solidarity and compassion
